Hello I’m looking for some advice. I have a 6 year old boy in year one. At his last parents evening I was told that they have flagged some concerns about his work. His handwriting is very messy and it seems like he is struggling to complete work independently.
His teacher told me that they have flagged concerns for now and will keep an eye on him. I spoke with the school SENCO who didn’t seem too concerned (although I get the feeling that I would need to push to get this taken seriously).
when he is with me at home his writing seems to be ok. But then I am reminding him of the need to remember finger spaces, letters the right way round etc. He does lose focus easily, and I find when I leave him to write independently his work becomes messier.
I was told that he is about middle of where he needs to be for reading. He seems to me to be doing ok with it - knows most of his sounds (although does forget digraphs in words sometimes etc.) I’ve also noticed that he sometimes misses words / lines and can guess certain words that start/end with the same sounds.
I don’t know how much of this is just him being a 6 year old and it will come in time, or if it could be something like dyslexia - in which case I just want to know what we might need to put in place to help him to thrive (whilst of course not worrying him or making him feel like there’s something wrong!)
any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!
