21 month old sleep

Hi,

I just need some advice on how to get my little boy to sleep and stay asleep during the night.

Typical bedtime : 7-8pm will sleep until 12:30am and will scream the house down until 5am. After 5am he will then sleep for 2 more hours and up for the day.

We have tried co sleeping but he absolutely hates laying next to us, the cry it out method doesn't work. He just will cry hours on end will not stop. Rocking to sleep, feeding to sleep . we've tried it all. But he will not sleep from12:30 to 5am everyday .

He naps from 12:30 pm to 2pm everyday. We have tired to not let him nap but that still doesn't help.

His a very active toddler. Always on his feet. I'm not sure what to do. It's been going on for the past 3 months we are exhausted.

He will not settle with my husband so I'm holding him every night and I'm really really tired. His 21 months old. Is this sleep regression.

That sounds absolutely exhausting. Can't think what it could be? Have you checked to see if his back teeth are coming through?

SABDELLAHI · 09/03/2024 03:36

@CadyEastman hi, it looks like all his teeth have come in. Not sure why he wakes up after midnight . But yes it's definitely exhausting. He doesn't seem to be tired enough to sleep.

Have you spoken to the HV? They used to run Sleep Clinics, don't know if they still do.

Is he at Nursery or with a CM? What have they said? Have they noticed any changes in the day or commented on his behaviour?

@CadyEastman Hi, spoke to health visitor said most toddler don't sleep until they're 5 . If he gets worse see GP.

No he is at home with me will start nursery in April 2024.

His a lot clingier than normal. Doesn't let me out of his sight. But it's really hard at night when I'm so tired and he will not let me lay with him to make it easier for both of to get some sleep. He wants me to hold him for 4/5 hours which is not ideal. I can't take him to my room which has a bigger bed he cries to go back to his room. I have to sit on footstool in his room all night holding him. My days are very tiring and I don't have the energy to keep with the boys . We have opened up the cot and made it into a cot bed. Will see how that works for us.

The odd night wake is still relatively normal like if they’re hungry, want some reassurance or lost their dummy or unwell etc but awake and screaming for 4.5 hours every night really, really isn’t. Go see the GP. I’d personally be worried there’s a medical cause like obstructive sleep apnea and digestive issues that could be causing pain overnight.

I agree with InTheRain. He needs checking by a GP.

It's not good enough the HV saying that they don't sleep until 5. This is a sudden and extreme change snd the extra clinginess would suggest there's something that needs investigating.

Did you get the bottom of this as I'm having this problem now too!!

SABDELLAHI · 05/04/2025 14:15

Hi, yes we got the bottom of this. It might not help anyone but it did help us.

He just needed someone to sleep next to. I have an older child who is 18 months older than my youngest who went through the sleep regression. We just put my youngest in his big brother’s room and he just slept through the night from then on in his own bed but next to his brother . No night wakes up . Fall’s asleep instantly with his brother at 8am every night.
