Toddler waking 4.30 - please help!

Ok wise mumsnetter parents

DS is 2yrs 9 months. He’s always been an early riser. He’s woken up pretty consistently at 5.30 since a small baby. We’ve hated it but all attempts to change it haven’t worked and we’ve just worked on accepting it and it’s been ok although we’ve been knackered.

Hes now getting up at half 4 and there’s just no way we can deal with this. He goes to bed at 8, has an hour and a half/2hours in the day from about 12. On the odd occasion he does sleep in till half 6 he refuses the nap. He has full blackout blinds and white noise in his room. He’s still in a cot with a sleeping bag.

Sp shall we just push him to drop the nap and hope it all works itself out? This will be hard as at nursery he is now just taking himself off to a corner and going to sleep as he’s shattered by 1130. Or push bedtime later and then hope he’ll naturally drop the nap himself if he starts waking up later? (And then hope to push bedtime earlier again once he’s not napping).

I keep reading conflicting stuff online, and DP and I have differing opinions. Any advice gratefully received!

Can you split the difference? Keep the nap but cap it at say 45 minutes? Then push through to the same bedtime or slightly later? If it works, you can think about gradually cutting the nap more and/or pushing it and bedtime back a bit?

My DS is 20months so a bit younger, but his nap dropping pattern is similar. Keeps his daytime nap but bedtime gets later and wake up time gets earlier until we cap the nap!

Another quick thought - clocks change in about 3 weeks, so if you can shift his wake time even to 5am, it will become 6am in a few weeks!
