Why is baby lying still like this?

DS is nearly 1. At naps and bedtime I put him in his sleeping bag, give him a cuddle then put him in his cot. He usually rolls about a bit, chats to himself and drops off.

This afternoon I put him down then looked at the baby monitor a few minutes later and he seemed to be asleep. I checked again 10 minutes later and he was in the same position but noticed his eyes were open. He’d just been lying there still but awake. I went in to check on him and he was absolutely fine.

Bedtime, same thing - I lower him into the cot and he lies there not even moving his arms but with his eyes open, totally silent. After 10 minutes or so I went in again and he instantly got up and started laughing/chatting. He’s got a cold and is snotty so is quite tired but not poorly.

Whats going on?! It’s freaking me out!

I'd be interested to know, as my one year old does this if I put her down awake, so I feed or rock/both to sleep and put her down asleep. Otherwise she lies still but eyes wide open! She can settle herself if she wakes and when she wakes up she tends to lie still eyes open for a bit then sits or stands up chatting when she's ready to get up

It’s so odd isn’t it! He’s doing it again today. He’s fine in all other regards but does have a horrible cold at the moment and is generally really tired and crabby.

He's just chilling 🤣

Let him just chill and drop off
