Bed guard for flat cot bed - help!

I'm struggling to find a bed guard for our cot bed. Really want to take one of the sides off (I'm short and DS is 2.5 and heavy!). Is it me being stupid?! The cot bed mattress is flat, there's no drop between the edge and the slats. Do I need a bed guard that attaches to the slats?! I got a mesh one but didn't realise there was meant to be a 25mm drop for it to sit in. Or shall I just get a pool noodle/roll a blanket?! Would prefer a bed guard as I don't trust DS!!

SafeTots make a wooden bed guard sized for a cot bed (there needs to be a safe gap at both ends) that can be screwed onto the slats, I think – that might work?

Alternatively, pool noodle/rolled blanket at the edge of the bed and a baby gate on the door?
