Toddler behaviour post being ill

Lemonsandlemonade · 20/02/2024 02:02

Last week DS was quite ill. He is on antibiotics and is really well within himself. He is tired though.

That being said his behaviour since being better is absolutely awful. His tantrums are horrific.

His sleep is not great. ( unusual for him)

I am so worried. Is it normal?

If he’s overtired that can certainly lead to tantrums. just like adults, it’s harder for kids to regulate their emotions when they’re running on a lack of sleep.

that said, there is a condition called PANDAS that some children can get - but it is after having strep throat:

”With PANDAS, your child may seem to turn into a different person overnight, becoming moody, anxious, aggressive, obsessive compulsive behaviors, and dealing with body movements they can’t control. It can be scary, but once your child is diagnosed with PANDAS and starts treatment, it’s likely they’ll make a full recovery”

Probably not this but I thought id just mention as something to look out for if the doc thought your son had strep throat

Oh apparently there is another reaction called “PANS” which comes from other conditions, other than strep, which is similar.
again, unlikely to be this but definitely worth keeping an eye out for:

“If your child doesn’t or didn't have strep, they don’t have PANDAS. But their symptoms could still be part of an immune system response gone wrong. PANDAS is part of a larger group of autoimmune diseases that affect the brain called pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS). The symptoms are similar, but they may be triggered by something other than strep. Your child’s doctor may order blood tests or brain scans to see if a different infection or something else entirely is causing the symptoms.”

It always takes my DS a couple of weeks to get back to normal after he’s been ill. And antibiotics themselves can make you feel a bit rubbish. If he’s not sleeping well he’s probably just tired and grumpy.

Yep sounds exhausted and in need of some quiet days. He’s not fully recovered yet.

Hey @Lemonsandlemonade just wondering if this got resolved. I'm having the same issue with my toddler post chest infection and I'm so worried?
Physically he's OK but behaviour is so out of the ordinary x x x
Would love some advice or reassurance
