8 month old sleep with face in mattress

Hi,

First time mum here and quite stressed after last night. My 8 month old for the last 2-3 months has been rolling onto her side in her sleep. She’s always placed on her back when she’s out in her cot but will immediately roll to her side. On a few occasions we will also find her on her tummy. She sleeps much more solidly in these positions. This is not a problem and is not what is stressing me as she is very strong and has no issue rolling both ways and lifting her head.

Last night I woke up and was unable to hear her as usual so went and checked on her. She was on her tummy and face down in the mattress with her nose pressed in. She was breathing very quietly. I immediately rolled her onto her back and she stirred and woke up within a few minutes of being in that position. I was unable to go back to sleep after that as I was terrified she’d do it again and not wake herself up. Not sure what I am hoping for from this post.. maybe some advice or even just someone who can ease my mind. She sleeps in her own cot and there is nothing else in there. She’s in a sleeping bag and her arms are free.

Any response would be greatly appreciated! x

If she is able to roll she is fine. Mine is 8 months and does exactly the same - as long as she is breathing I don't worry.

As soon as he learned how to roll over, our eldest promptly flipped over to his front as soon as I put him in the cot, and stayed sleeping like that at night until he was 12 or 13 months. He's now 4 and I don't think it's done him any harm!
