Hello, I’m in the middle of separating from partner, we rent (do not know where to go from there) and have two children, the thing is my son is so upset about it and doesn’t want us to split but keeps saying he will go with his dad which means moving 1.5 hours away, I really don’t know what to do, wether to let him go or fight for him to stay.

What are his reasons? Will both children stay together? Is it affordable? Is his dad in the position to be the resident parent?

if it is safe and affordable I would say you need to take his feelings into account and let him stay with his dad.

I would be hesitant to split the siblings up though.

What are his reasons? Are you suspicious that dad is saying negative things about you to him?

He would be going back home as he says he cannot afford a place near by, which means they will be sharing a room, if my son stays with me he would have a room to himself eventually. My daughter will be staying with me, it’s killing me to think my son will be somewhere else.
our house is small so unfortunately my children have over head things that have been said and I know a few things have been said when I haven’t been here out of anger.

I think in this instance you and your husband need to stand together and parent.

moving in with his dad isn’t practical on space or for his education. Can you show some compromise and say he can stay the whole of the summer holidays.

Oh I wouldn’t stop my son seeing his dad and if he wanted to stay for holidays then fine, I can compromise that sort of thing, it’s the fact he wants to move away for good from everything here, at 10 years old I don’t know if he truly understands what it all in tails, as he’s a very angry boy (understandably) at the moment.
