Affordable double prams

Expecting in August and will have a 1.5yr old also.
Looking for a double pram that has a carrycot on the one side.
Most are around £1000 which I'm not willing to pay as I'm only going to need a double for just over a year when DD will no longer need a pram.

Any recommendations?

Second hand?

Mummy2823 · 05/02/2024 12:17

@Lifebeganat50 yeah willing to have second hand as long as it's in pretty decent condition. I've looked on marketplace. Still about £600 for the Bugaboo Donkeys

Hiya Mummy2823

firstly, congratulations on your 2nd! I’m due in May and my daughter will be 13 months old when our new arrival turns up. I too, had no idea what double pram to go for.

for me, I listed what was important to me (and everyone’s requirements differ):

I needed a pram that could convert from single to double and back again as and when needed (in case I’m taking one of my children somewhere, and my partner or my parents etc were taking the other elsewhere).

I wanted a pram that could be both parent and world facing.

I wanted a pram that had decent large-ish wheels (we live in the countryside and there are lots of dirt tracks).

I wanted a pram that was side-by-side rather than a tandem.

I wanted a pram that could clip a car seat on.

I wanted a pram that would fold up into the boot of my car (we have an X1, for reference).

I wanted something quite popular so that I could update or get parts or customise easily.

For us, we chose to get a Bugaboo Donkey. It’s the version 2, which we found on Facebook sales for £250.

After using my beloved Silvercross, I’d say the only downside to the Bugaboo is that it feels a little bit flimsier than the Silvercross… but all in all, I’m happy with the Bugaboo Donkey and it’s an absolute dream to push around. I’ve since customised it as I’m not a fan of the all black prams (although they are much more practical, I know). I just need to purchase some new handlebar covers and we are good to go. I’m really looking forward to using it more when my son arrives now!

@Kelsie1985 really helpful Thankyou!!
that's the pram I was looking at as I liked that it converts into a single also. I wasn't a fan of tandems because I would want carrycot at the top facing me and then the older baby looks really squashed underneath
I'll definitely keep looking on marketplace. Is it easy enough to get replacement parts if for example the hood is marked or the handlebar covers damaged?

Yeah it’s easy to find replacement parts for the Bugaboo Donkey: most versions of parts are interchangeable, and if not, each version is quite easy to find parts for; EBay, Facebook Sales and Vinted; as well as the Bugaboo website itself. If you’re looking at customising, I used IndigoFamily on Etsy (she’s not cheap but I was so impressed with the quality and the finish is second to none - I’m so happy with the canopy/hood because I found the Bugaboo’s hoods really flimsy and the new fabric has really given it better structure). I’ll likely purchase handlebar covers from Etsy too as I really like to put my own stamp on things 😅.

Another thing I really like about the Donkey is that you can just change the fabric carrycot out and switch in the pushchair fabric; you use the same seat frame for both, so you don’t have a separate carrycot and pushchair, making it easier to store, if that makes sense?

I have a 12 month age gap between my 2 and I bought the Silvercross wave, which converts between single and double and can fit a buggy board.

I bought mine off a website called bambinoandbeyond secondhand for a fraction of the price it is brand new and it was in perfect condition

@alexio I'll definitely have a look on that website Thankyou!!
