How do you do meals with toddler without a dining room table?

We don't have the space for a dining room table, we have a kitchen island and up until now we have used an ingenuity booster seat type thing on top of the island for my DD. She's nearly 2 and getting a bit big for it now so I'm just wondering what other people do? It's a high island so she can't sit at it on a regular chair and there's no space for a high chair beside it. Any suggestions much appreciated!

Would one of those Tripp trap chairs fit?

LittleMissCantBeArsed · 03/02/2024 17:45

My youngest DC had a small table (£10) from ikea with a matching wooden chair (£5). Lasted years! We ate off our laps. No room for a dining table (dining room was used as a bedroom for older DC).

Oh yes, we had a ‘toddler table’ for a while too

Just a little Ikea wooden table and chairs.

Be prepared for the masses to inform you that if you have room for a tv and a sofa then your priorities are SIMPLY ALL WRONG and you should have a table instead.

We have a clip on chair that works on our countertop. I put a chair underneath in case of acccidents

We have bar stools with backs and sides for the island so the 2YO can sit on them without a risk of toppling (Kartell Masters stools if you’re interested and they come in counter or bar height depending on how high your island is, but I’m sure there are loads of other options).

My DD has a dining room table and they eat evening meals there but DC eat all snacks in the kitchen up to a child sized plastic coloured table and 2 chairs and they do art work sitting at it too.

I found some high stool type chairs with arms on which I used for my DD when they were too big for the high chair type things

Imnotabigbeliever · 03/02/2024 18:55

Kitchen table

museumum · 03/02/2024 18:57

You can get high chair type things that clip onto the table top. Saves so much space as no legs to trip over.

Cheeesus · 03/02/2024 18:57

Have you got normal chairs at the island? You could do something there I would think, either by swapping a chair for her in or adding a booster to a chair.

museumum · 03/02/2024 18:59

If she’s too big for that I’d buy a single barstool with back support

BeyondAReasonableDoubt · 03/02/2024 19:09

We use a small table/chair set for kids, got it from Argos :-)

Both mine did too! It was brilliant. IIRC it was a high chair that converted to a small chair and table.

Oh this is really good idea thank you

Thanks everyone, lots of really good ideas. We currently have high barstool style seats at the island but will look into getting one she can't slip out of. Think I will get a toddler table too! She will really like the novelty of that

We had a bloom fresco bar stool type high chair which was fine without the insert until DS was 4
