Help a FTM to be… does a new baby really need 3 beds?!

Everyone says we need: a cot for the nursery, a next to me crib for our room, and a Moses basket for day sleeping downstairs.
Do we really need to buy all this while I’m pregnant? They’d only ever be in one at a time!

We have been looking at the Mamas and Papas Lua as a next to me, I like that the side of the crib has a button to push it up or down as opposed to a zip. It also doesn’t need attaching to the bed, which is great as I would never want to cosleep anyway.

We only have a small house. Would it be so inconvenient to bring the Next to me up and down the stairs each day from living room to our bedroom?

How did you make it work? Trying not to be suckered in by marketing & overspend, in order to redirect my money into savings for mat leave. Thanks

I had a Moses basket and a spare base. Just took the basket up and down

Cookerhood · 30/01/2024 18:10

We had a moses basket to start with then a cot. We also had the pram downstairs which we could put them in to sleep during the day. I'm old though & they went in their own rooms almost straight away.

petalsandstars · 30/01/2024 18:10

I had the pram in the lounge for naps initially as it was too much hassle to take basket up and down stairs all day

We had a sleep safe mattress in the carrycot of the pram so would take this off the frame and use for sleeping downstairs (not that I could ever really get away with putting my newborns down for more than 30 seconds!!).

catmomma67 · 30/01/2024 18:14

you dont HAVE to have anything, i think its more about WANT! its a bit of a faff lugging cribs up and downstairs everyday, and with a newborn you will be exhausted as well.

there are plenty of these items out there on the 2nd hand market, perfectly servicable and cheap (just purhcase a new mattress).. that way the cost wont be too high.

you dont really need a cot for the first 6 months, because i assume baby will be in your room, so you don't have to buy that right away...

unfortunatley social medis puts a lot of pressure on new families to provide the perfect nursery and its not fair... good luck with your pregnancy

museumum · 30/01/2024 18:14

our side sleeper got moved around the house. And you don’t need a nursery cot till they grow out of the side sleeper so we held off and enjoyed the floor space in there till dc was 8mo or so.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 30/01/2024 18:15

We have the tutti bambini next to me, can be used side up or side down. Way too big to move up and downstairs. Bought that new in sale. Got a moses basket for downstairs free from work colleague and got new mattress for less than £20. Just as well as baby refuses to sleep in it so contact naps in day 😂. Not bought cot yet as no need! We'll get that next set of sales, though grandparents have expressed they want to buy it. Our pram bassinet is also rated for sleep so we would have used that if hadn't got the basket free.

bogoblin · 30/01/2024 18:18

We did a next to me style cot for night time sleep to about 6 months. Once he'd outgrown that, we bought a full size cot for night sleep. During the day he would nap in the pram bassinet (came as part of the pram we bought so no extra expense and he'd either nap in it on the living room floor or on the go if we were out for a walk ) or contact nap or carrier nap.

I don't think there's any point in buying a big cot yet if they're not going to be in it!

We had a pram downstairs and I pushed DD all around the house (I checked with the midwives and it was ok to sleep in as it was a proper flat carrycot attachment with a Moses basket mattress) it was so convenient - especially as I moved room to room so she could stay with me

Lindy2 · 30/01/2024 18:21

Both mine hated the moses basket so that was a waste of time and space. Daytime naps were done in the baby buggy.

We coslept so baby was in bed next to me. It wasn't planned to be like that but that's what worked best for us and I did the same for my first and second child. I liked cosleeping.

There was a cot in their bedroom for when they went into their own rooms.

Tiredpregnantlady · 30/01/2024 18:21

With my first we had the cot in our bedroom (next to me cribs weren't really a thing then) and a moses basket for downstairs. Moses basket was gifted to us (and baby was big and outgrew it in about 8 weeks). For this baby we will have a cot in the nursery (I will use it for day time naps once I start to establish a routine to get them used to the nursery). I have a next to me our bedroom (baby will hopefully be in that for 6 months) and I have bought a second hand moses basket for downstairs (£10 on market place, I will buy a new mattresses). I'm trying to save money too - lots of bargains on FB market place, things only used for a few months so in great condition. I got my Next to me in the Black Friday sale but I've seen immaculate ones on market place for about £40/50. And we have a local free FB group where people often give away baby equipment so worth checking there for moses baskets/next to mes!

Mummyboy1 · 30/01/2024 18:22

No you don't need all of that. Definitely a cot or cotbed, and then something for downstairs.

SparkyBlue · 30/01/2024 18:24

I'd an uppababy so I used the bassinet from that downstairs and then I put DD straight into her cot in our room and I bypassed a Moses basket. I had a next to me in our room for dc 2 and 3 which I loved. I didn't have a nursery for my younger two so that's not necessary at all

DappledThings · 30/01/2024 18:24

Never had a Moses basket. Just used carrycot from the pram downstairs.

A crib is essential unless your bedroom is big enough to fit their full size cot. We had a crib and then a cot that converted to a toddler bed so between those had what we needed up to about age 4

popplego · 30/01/2024 18:24

I don't think you absolutely "need" it but it depends if it would make life easier for you and if, to you, that's therefore worth the space and cost.

We had a snuzpod (next to me type thing) upstairs. The top comes off it but it was too cumbersome to take up and downstairs twice a day, also I'd had an EMCS so couldn't have managed that myself when DH went back to work on shifts.

DS mostly slept on me downstairs as he was (still is!) a clinger, I didn't want to buy a Moses basket but in hindsight it would've been helpful for downstairs. He did like his swingy chair or pram for naps once he was past the newborn stage.

bravotango · 30/01/2024 18:25

I'd get the next to me for upstairs and a pram with a safe sleep bassinet that you can use downstairs. Don't bother with the cot until baby is here, ours never slept in it and we gave it away 😁

FrangipaniBlue · 30/01/2024 18:26

We used the pram/carry cot as a moses basket and just carried it between bedroom and downstairs.

Bought a cot bed his bedroom when he was old enough to go in it.

popplego · 30/01/2024 18:28

Oh forgot to say we did also have the big cot in his bedroom but he didn't sleep in it til he'd outgrown the snuzpod, so that could've waited.

TheBeeb · 30/01/2024 18:28

We used a next to me upstairs and just the pram bassinet downstairs. Never had a Moses basket with either child and didn't miss it!

Then a cot for whenever they move to their own room around 6 months. We got a ikea one that's survived 5 years, two children and a house move so far and is still going strong!

berksandbeyond · 30/01/2024 18:28

You won’t want to be carrying a piece of furniture up and down the stairs every day when you have a newborn, no. I’d have thought that might be common sense. A Moses basket is £50.

Cot for their room can wait a bit, if you want / can’t afford it yet.

Tisfortired · 30/01/2024 18:30

DS2 is now 12 months but sorry to say yes he did have 3 beds. He had his Moses basket in the lounge, the chicco next to me in our room and his own cot bed in his room. Needless to say the cotbed saw 0 action for 6 months (bit like my DP) but I just wanted it bought and set up. The Moses basket was so handy for day time naps until he was a bit older and could plonk him in the bouncer if I needed to answer the door or what have you.

The next to me we used every night until he went in his own room.

But for the last 6 months he has only slept in his cot and we have now streamlined a lot of the bulky baby crap. Bouncer, Jumperoo, next to me, Moses basket… all gone now but invaluable at the time. I sold them all on Marketplace for £50 for the lot so recouped some cost. You could even buy them second hand - they use them such a short amount of time they’ll probably be good as new.

MrsDilligaf · 30/01/2024 18:31

We had a next to me until dd was 6 months. Daytime long naps in her pram carrycot, short ones on me or DH.

Didn't consider a moses basket, because we had the pram.

Whatever you do, don't go carrying furniture up and downstairs.

blackteaplease · 30/01/2024 18:31

We had a crib next to the bed and used the pram downstairs for naps. You won't need a cot straight away.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 30/01/2024 18:33

Gosh having a baby has really changed since I had one :)

Mine had a cot in her bedroom, where she slept from day one.

We had something called a baby listener so if/when she woke and cried, I heard her and went up to her. I understand baby listeners even improved after that by having cameras on them :)

When she fell asleep during the day ( after a feed etc. ) she was carried up to her cot.

But I had a sleeper :) she would fall asleep in her pram when we were out, fall asleep in the car seat when out and we knew that we could manage one disturbance i.e. park the car and get her in her cot right away and she would continue sleeping.

Many years later :) she still likes to sleep !

taratatata · 30/01/2024 18:34

Thanks all! Never thought of the pram carrycot.

I did think carrying up and downstairs was silly but it said portable which made me confused!
