Hello,

my baby boy (11 months nearly 12) starts nursery tomorrow and I’m DREADING IT! He had 3 settling in days and did quite well but he has got a cold now so I feel so guilty his first day will be when he’s feeling rubbish!!!

im off so I’m going to collect him early but I think it’s important for him to go for a bit. Am I right?

it’s so hard! Wish I could be off with him forever but I’m a single Mum

i wouldn’t no.

not just for his sake

how bad is this cold? and if just come on, liable to get worse

and you’re off anyway 🤷‍♀️

Whinge · 28/01/2024 16:13

It depends on the cold

Snotty nose, slight cought but still eating and drinking well - I would send him.
Temperature, sleepy, not eating much - I would keep him home.

He’s eating and drinking fine just runny nose and bunged up.

he’s fine in the day just wants a few more cuddles. Was thinking of having his first nap at home then sending him for a few hours, it’s £70 a day mind……

If he's alright in himself then yes send him in. It will be the first of many colds.

Not for his first day I wouldn't, especially as you are not going to be at work.

Whenever my daughter has started a new nursery I have taken her in 30-60 minutes late and picked her up 30-60 minutes early. I do breakfast at home and then take her in rather than having breakfast at nursery. She's usually until they close at 6 ish and I pick her up around 5 instead. So on a standard day she would do 8.30-6 but for the first day I did 9.30 -5 so an almost full day but she got a bit longer with me before and afterwards

Whenever she is ill I do breakfast at home rather than nursery dropping her off at 9 instead of 8.30 as it gives me a bit of time to evaluate if she's well enough to go in and to give the Calpol chance to have an effect

NoKnit · 28/01/2024 22:32

I'd keep him home if you are off.

Also can't believe people give their kids calpol and then send to nursery. Surely sick enough for medicine means they need to be home?

Our nursery encourages it and pragmatic about illness. She only goes in with Calpol if she only needs that one dose in 24h to get over the morning hump when cold symptoms are usually worse. If she is wanting to play by the time she has had breakfast she goes to nursery. If she is only wanting cuddles from mummy she stays at home. She has had Calpol before nursery like this twice in a year and has had one period of illness. Lots of colds where she has been able to go in without any Calpol.

what have you decided?

Am13 · 29/01/2024 13:28

I kept him off after a horrible night he got hardly any sleep- going to take him in for a few hours tomorrow then same Friday- he has to start next Monday regardless as I’m back to work but I didn’t think he was well enough today

thanks for all the advice 🩵

unfortunately there is no “regardless” about it!

All the best with return to work. Might be tricky initially but you’ll find your feet
