Hi to all, looking for advice please...
My 13 year old daughter struggles with constipation (sadly passed down from generation to generation).
Never in her life has she gone more than once in a week. Over the years there has been instances of not going for 2 weeks (yes I know!!!l)
I've tried everything...Drs visits, hospital visits (when it had been 17 days!) , reflexology, different medications (laxido, lactulose, senna tablets, dulcolax, syrup of figs the list is endless)

Diet is an issue as she is superfussy, but we encourage fruit/veg eating but that is a battle. She will drink juices, weetabix anything we can think of that may help.

Any advice from anyone?

Thanks

Have you tried stewed apples (for the pectin) or proper bone broth (for the collagen)?

Both are gut healing in general but can definitely help constipation.

It can be due to underactive thyroid - has she had this tested?

I have had a lazy bowel all my life, and once or at most twice a week is normal for me. Here are some foods I have found that aid bowel movements. Beware; they are not all healthy and/or appropriate for a young teenager

  • Coffee. Decaff doesn't do it.
  • Actimel (these are full of sugar fyi)
  • Trebor extra strong mints. An entire packet, in one sitting. Guaranteed movement
  • Butternut squash/sweet potato/ carrot soup. Homemade, if possible, but storebought does the job
  • Banana muffins (???). Once I made a dozen and ate 9 at once. Didn't leave the bathroom that evening. The bananas were very ripe
  • Kiwis
  • Homemade smoothies

Things that I actively avoid:

  • coca cola. Not fizzy drinks, Coke specifically
  • Any processed food (frozen pizza, processed meat etc)
  • White bread. I only eat 50/50

Does she cycle? It's the perfect exersize to encourage a movement. Tummy massages also work but IME you need to do it for an hour minimum to have any real affect
