Suddenly not wanting to go to nursery?

My son turns 4 next month and has been in nursery since age 2. He has always loved it and has been eager to go in etc. Never any problems.

Last week he announced that he didn’t want to go to nursery and when asked why he said he was feeling shy. I kept him off and made a day of it and he went in the next day no problem.

Today he went in and when he realised he was going back in tomorrow, he again said he didn’t want to go. Same reasoning.

He did say that a specific boy has been “hitting him every day” and we raised it with his key person today so they can just keep an eye out. He also has 2 best friends and my son told us he doesn’t think one of them loves him anymore!

I’m a bit lost as to how to navigate this. It hurts my heart, and I’m concerned about the sudden change.

I should add we do have a new baby at home too.

Kids aren’t stupid. If they suddenly don’t want to go there’s a reason. My DD at 3yo just started to refuse to go in to nursery, saying “dangerous, me not go”. I never found out why. Nursery denied anything had happened but they would wouldn’t they! We switched to a different nursery and she was more than happy to go in.

Children are incredibly good at working out how to get their own way. He now knows how to get a day at home with mummy. Did he ever do this before the baby arrived? I'm guessing not.

@Jewelanemone His preference has always been nursery over a day at home with me, or anyone else! He was obsessed with that place. His absolute favourite place to be!
