Hi all, my LO is 14 weeks old and was breastfeed but I believe he had an allergy to milk as our oldest did, we done the whole month trial without me on cows milk while still feeding and he was much happier, we are currently on sma althera & although he is still happy on it he's also sick after feeds & sometimes a while after, we have him on gaviscon but that doesn't seem to help, any tips on what I could do next? Thank you in advance

Ask to try an amino acid formula, althera has broken down milk in it so some babies still react. Are you still breastfeeding? If so cutting out soya might also help as it's common to be allergic to both.

Babies that react to dairy through breastfeeding often need an amino acid formula as dairy proteins in breastmilk as partially broken down akin to an extensively hydrolysed formula

The formulas are thin and often require thickening or omperazole along side as they can trigger reflux in babies that were symptomatic with reflux before or turn a "happy spitter" into an unhappy spitter or silent refluxer.

I would be asking for alfamino or neocate. The other thing to consider is the other ingredients in formula. My daughter has a lot of food allergies including coconut and the time the only formula that didn't contain coconut was alfamino. A single Oz of pepti lead to 8h of continuous inconsolable screaming she had 3h sleep 3am-6am and then continued for most of the following day. After that we never trusted the GP to correct cross check ingredients against her allergy list

Hi thanks, I'm not breastfeeding anymore couldn't do dairy free any longer missed all my naughty treats too often, He was put on pepti in the first place but that didn't seem to agree with him so was put onto the sma one so just seeing what else I could try/do.
I've been told goats milk formula is gentle but also not good with an cows allergy?

Hi Op. My son went through something similar: Pepti didn’t work for him (hydrolysed formula) so he had to be put on Neocate (amino acid formula). I’d speak to your GP to get him on it sooner rather than later as neocate is notorious for having a bad taste and they get used to it better the younger they are. Good luck, CMPA is a real pain.

There's a very high cross over in proteins so about 90% of children than react to dairy also react to other mammalian milks such as goats milk

I don't know if my bar lowered but since stopping breastfeeding my allergy baby I have kept with the dairy free snacks and the regular ones taste wrong now! What foods were you missing?

Champs182 · 23/01/2024 16:48

Thanks for your feedback, it's a pain when you don't know what to do for the best, cows milk I missed the most as I love milk shakes, the other milks I couldn't get on with, and chocolate was my worst for missing, but I'm glad it's worked out for you though.

It was still unsustainable and I had to switch to formula at 10 months! I just have kept with a lot of the foods. X
