Help! Nursery meltdowns

If anyone could give us any advice for this we’d be extremely grateful.

Our 3yr old son has just started nursery - and the first week went really well. The staff say he is really well behaved whilst there and seems to be loving it.

But every single morning we are getting mass meltdowns trying to get him into the car. He will continue the kicking, screaming and just complete refusal until he is in the classroom and we have left. Staff will then contact us to say he has calmed down and is completely fine - they are as shocked as us.

When he comes home, we find he is very irritable and no appeasing him helps. We feel like we are walking on eggshells with him, waiting for another meltdown. Getting him upstairs for a bath/bed is a nightmare. We also have a 13 week old… and I’m wondering if this is a late reaction to her arrival - as he’s been great with her so far.

Before all of this started - meltdowns were rare and he was able to communicate to us his needs really well. Now we are completely at a loss and wondering what has happened to our happy, calm little man.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Things we have tried:
Giving him “quiet time” when he comes home
Discussing with him the “plan for the day”
Offering for him to take a toy/teddy with him to nursery
Giving him 1-1 time with both parents
Trying to simplify bedtime and be consistent with routine (Bath, Book, Bed)
