Apologies in advance as this is a long one..
So my now 7 month old DD came down with what I believe was a cold mid November, after a week and a half I took her to the GP as she developed a chesty cough. GP said it was viral and that antibiotics would not do anything and to let it run its course. Between beginning of December and Xmas I took her to the GP again to be checked as this cold was ongoing for nearly a month and again was told it was viral. On Xmas eve we took her to A&E children’s department to checked her over as she had slight sucking around her ribs when breathing. Observations etc were all fine and GPs there said sounds like bronchiolitis and should get better after day 5 but that she was holding her own and didn’t need to be admitted. Anyway… saw no improvement whatsoever but she was no worse. So last week I took her back to her own GP again, we saw a different GP who said she could hear crackles all over chest and that she did think it was viral still but that she couldn’t 100% rule out bacterial infection and because this has been ongoing for nearly 2 months that we could try antibiotics. Me and my partner agreed and we were informed they may have no benefit whatsoever and that it would in fact be a virus that needs to run it’s course.
The antibiotics were a 5 day course and did seem to clear up the coughing, wheezing etc up and DD seemed and sounded back to her normal self. So I assumed that it was an infection after all. HOWEVER.. a week since finishing the antibiotics and being back to her normal self DD appears to have been struck down with another cold.. snotty nose, coughing and sounding chesty/wheezy again. Temp is fine and eating/drinking, wet nappies etc.
Am I to assume this is unfortunately another virus she’s picked up, or maybe infection has come back? Also wondering could this be some sort of allergy? I’ll be honest I have no other symptoms to suggest that but I’m getting stressed and worried as she’s had some sort of cough/cold for the last 2-3 months and I’m worried there could be something else going on.
Wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar, whether this sounds normal for babies to have this many colds etc or if this could indeed be allergies? Appreciate any advice and sorry again for the long post, thanks 🙏 x
