DD9 allergic to a couple of things, some worse than others. Has the usual special coloured tray for allergy children school meals. Today school managed to give her something they thought was suitable but had something she is allergic to (egg) in. She vomited at school a few times after going to first aid feeling unwell but otherwise ok, no other allergy symptoms and we have brought her home to keep an eye. Possibly growing out of this allergy, other allergy is nuts which they don't have on site (would require hospital) Headteacher was very apologetic and cross with kitchen. I have cancelled future school meals and will send packed lunches. DH fuming. What would you do? I mean I am annoyed but can't see kicking up a fuss would do much. They will double down on process anyway to make sure it doesn't happen again to another child.

I'd be asking two questions...

  1. How did it happen
  2. What are they doing to prevent similar happening to any child.

I have a DC with multiple allergies, including similar reactions to eggs and nuts as you've described.

My approach would be the same as yours, your DH sounds a bit hot-headed and emotional about this.

The only thing I'd do differently is email the headteacher with a description of what happened and when, so that there's a written record in case it happens again and I need to take further action. But that's it.

@PuttingDownRoots you're right I should understand exactly how it happened. I heard from the headteacher "the vegan mince had egg in it" and at school the first aider said she had had "quorn mince"
They clearly realised it had egg in once she turned up at first aid (not before) so must have thought it was ok then looked at the ingredients then. May have been failure to check before, maybe their order was incorrect or something but I should get confirmation.
Thank you @Raincloudsonasunnyday good plan to get in writing. I will email the school, confirm what happened and ask for clarification of how it happened. I can do all that without nastiness/bad blood with the school!

The vegan mince clearly isn't vegan if it had egg in it!

SnowsFalling · 17/01/2024 15:26

There needs to be some serious education in the kitchen if they think vegan stuff is ok with egg in.

This happened to a child at my dcs' school recently. It's a bit worrying, but like you I'm not sure what good would come of kicking up a stink. I totally understand why your dh is angry though. It's pretty poor not checking if the vegan mince is in fact vegan!

I think what you're doing is right. No more school meals and just packed lunch.

Glad your dc is OK now

pashmina696 · 17/01/2024 15:42

So sorry to read this it shouldn't have happened. If you are happy to stick with packed lunches then of course do, but whatever the process was for preparing meals for the children with allergies has failed, and needs investigation as to why. Quorn clearly state their allergens on their packaging.

FurballFrenzy · 17/01/2024 15:49

Quorn mince isn’t vegan! They’ve made a big assumption there.

therainneverbotheredmeanyway · 17/01/2024 16:51

Only some of the quorn products are vegan, lots are vegetarian!

ScierraDoll · 17/01/2024 17:19

If your child is allergic to certain food items then don't take chances with any food prepared by a third party. They might not be aware of the contents of the product or they might have been told that the food does not contain that ingredients. Either way the only way to be sure is to prepare your child's meal yourself rather than putting the responsibility on others.
