Feeding baby in car park?

91 replies

Erlouise · 17/01/2024 11:06

Hi ladies
do you think it’s acceptable to feed my baby in the car in a car park?
im going out with some friends to a big trail park and it’s far too cold to feed them on benches in the park so thought I could head back to the car in the warm to do it abd can also do any bum changes then too.
DP thinks it’s cruel and has said to find a coffee shop but that means strapping a hungry baby into car seat and driving off all while they’re screaming for a bottle which I’m just not prepared to do

OP posts:

It's not cruel at all. I'd breastfeed literally anywhere

DappledThings · 17/01/2024 12:34

How bizarre. I can't fathom how anyone could think this cruel.

But presumably you could be pretty far from the car when the baby's hungry unless they are on a schedule and you time your walk precisely. I get that for you it might be warmer to sit in the car than on a bench but won't make any difference to the baby. Trying to ensure you're back in the car park at the right time seems a bit complicated

NoCloudsAllowed · 17/01/2024 12:36

Why would it be cruel? What's he on about?

Do you mean breastfeeding? Is he just being weird about the possibility someone might get an eyeful (he needs to give up on that)

I BF plenty of places, wear a vest you can pull down and top you can lift up, you would have about 10cm sq of boob unclothed and a warm baby's head in front of that.

My low point was breastfeeding behind some bins. I was out for a walk with my daughter and she was screaming for a feed and it was a pouring with rain and it was the only remotely sheltered space I could find.

I breastfeed in many pub car parks if she woke on one of our walks. Although the pubs weren't open due to lockdowns. We did a 2-3h walk every day and could end up 30-45 minutes from home.

YouAndMeAndThem · 17/01/2024 12:40

I never breastfed anywhere else but the car when out and about as I found it difficult to do it discreetly. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, as long as you baby is cosy.

UnravellingTheWorld · 17/01/2024 12:53

On what grounds is it cruel to feed a baby while sheltered from the winter elements?!?

I've fed my child in the car before and quite frankly, not thought anything of it

LittleMrsPretty · 17/01/2024 12:56

@kisstheblarney

it really isn’t

Also in the bench you will have company of your friends, BF is loney enough without having to skulk off to your car!! There a warmer places on site to feed a baby!!

Sherrystrull · 17/01/2024 13:00

I regularly breast fed in the car. It's warm, safe, comfortable and easy.

Oh course it is, you're out of the laments, the other stuff you e said is irrelevant to what @kisstheblarney said and not what the OP asked,

I have a car, when I get back in i, it is warmer than when I am outside of it, it is sheltered for a start off.

Goodlard · 17/01/2024 13:08

*Elements not laments

Apparently it @LittleMrsPretty thinks it's no warmer 🤔 !

JustExistingNotLiving · 17/01/2024 13:11

I’d say it’s much more cruel to make the child wait.

But then I had a baby who went from 0 to 100 in under 5 seconds and wouldn’t stop screaming until I fed him (and needed to be calmed down before he realised his bottle was there in his mouth to start eating) 😂🤪

It’s fine @Erlouise .
Feed your baby in the car.

And OP bottle feeds................... not that that makes any difference, but for some reason you think it does.

You've got it wrong all ways round to be honest!

Do you know the place the OP is going to to be so confident there are ‘Warner places on site to feed a baby’?

Sherrystrull · 17/01/2024 13:19

I have fed my dc on many a cold bench and it's miserable. Sitting in the car is infinitely easier and better. I used to push the passenger seat back, put a coffee in the cup holder and relax for a bit.

kisstheblarney · 17/01/2024 13:22

@LittleMrsPretty OP is bottle feeding, so the lonely breastfeeding comment is irrelevant, although I don't agree with with you.

You say stay on the bench with friends and then say, they'll be more comfortable places? Which is to be?

Of course out of wind etc is going to be warmer!

AyeRightYeAre · 17/01/2024 13:32

@kisstheblarney

My car takes at least 15 mins to warm up. Maybe you have a fabulous super duper car though?

No just one with doors and windows that close and stop the wind? Is yours an open top that you can't ever close?

Sherrystrull · 17/01/2024 13:35

A car seat is much more comfortable than a cold bench.

kisstheblarney · 17/01/2024 13:36

@AyeRightYeAre when you're in a car and it gets a bit chilly do you close the window? (Moving or not) or open it if you're a bit hot?

Same in a house?

AyeRightYeAre · 17/01/2024 13:36

@kisstheblarney

lol no but it's minus 7C outside just now and only about one degree 'warmer'inside the car.

So no amount of keeping the doors closed is going to change that. 😂

Mazuslongtoenail · 17/01/2024 13:38

All the people shocked by ‘the car isn’t any warmer’ comment - but when you get in the car in the morning, it’s the same temperature as outside?

Take out the wind chill factor and its going to be warmer in the car than on a bench. The seat under your arse is going to be warmer too. Not cosy, nobody claimed that, but certainly less cold. Anywhere enclosed is going to be a bit warmer than outside.

I would just stay outside myself, can't imagine trying to time my walking speed and that of others to ensure I was at the car by the time a next feed was due. That's even if there's a schedule for feeding already in place.

Meadowfinch · 17/01/2024 13:40

It the perfect solution, not cruel at all, unless I've missed something.

Having said that, I was bf my ds in the car park at Warwick services and some appalling man pressed his face against the window and watched me. Every time I turned away, he walked around to the other side of the car and peered in. 🙁

AyeRightYeAre · 17/01/2024 13:42

@DappledThings

Yes you are quite right.

I was just responding to the hyperbole of the other poster.
