Chicken pox?

Is it possible to have chicken pox with only one spot?!

My 18month DS woke up with a big spot yesterday, it was bright red and angry but we thought it was a dribble rash from teething. Within a few hours it went yellow and crusty! He had a raging temperature all afternoon and evening and a really runny nose. Today the spot looks really awful but he only seems to have one? No new ones?

I've attached photos. The one with milky breakfast around his mouth is this morning! The other is when it started to turn yesterday.

As I child, I started chicken pox with one big spot on my face and it was a while before more developed so it's certainly not unheard of.

Could be impetigo

PandaSock · 07/01/2024 10:13

I wonder if it could be impetigo. A pharmacist would be able to tell you if so.

Himawarigirl · 07/01/2024 10:21

My eldest had very few spots, only 5 or 6 and they didn’t really bother her. But after two weeks her brother came out with it and was totally covered and uncomfortable. I read that the first one in a family to get it often has a lighter time of it.

showmethegin · 07/01/2024 10:57

Oh god didn't even think about impetigo! Does that usually present with a fever?

It hasn't when I've seen it before but I believe it can do.

It could be impetigo plus a virus or it could maybe be chicken pox too, as you say. I would probably see how things look tomorrow morning and make a judgement from there.

If your wee one is still feverish, stick to calpol not Nurofen to bring down the temp just in case it is chicken pox which doesn't mix well with ibuprofen.

Hand foot and mouth or impetigo I think rather than chicken pox. Gorgeous child 💚

SarahLHs · 07/01/2024 14:54

Yes. My husband had it at the same time as his sister as a child and only had 1/2 spots. However our kids had it recently and he caught it again so must not have built immunity from having it so mildly.

dementedpixie · 07/01/2024 14:54

Are they only on his face?
I agree it could be impetigo or HFM rather than chickenpox

He had HFM around 3 months ago, but obviously could have gotten it again; those nurseries are like plague village 😂

Will be interesting to see what the dr says if/when they call back. These toddlers like to keep us on our toes don't they!

Just found some behind his ear!

I also think impetigo is most likely looking at that. Pox usually starts on the torso and you can get HFM more than once.

Regardless, I hope he feels much better soon.

PandaSock · 07/01/2024 16:43

For what it's worth, I'm starting to think it's chicken pox now. He's a wee cutie, though, regardless. Hope he doesn't feel too bad with it if it is the pox. Great to get it out of the way before he starts school too.

Marzeewiz · 19/01/2024 14:13

Looks like chickenpox to me. We had one spot on his back for two days before the rest (and I mean ALL the rest) came. Best of luck and hope it passes quickly.
