Hi all,

Am hoping for some reassurance and experiences please. Would love to be told am being overly anxious and silly!

We've had a run of colds since the end of November and a bought of conjunctivitis so its been a fun Winter so far.

My 8 month old started with a new snotty nose on boxing day, about 5 days ago it turned into a horrid little cough. 3 nights ago it turned into a high fever at night time. It does come down with ibuprofen/paracetamol but quite slowly and shes still running hot.

I rang 111 and took her to be checked with OOH GP 2 nights ago because her underarm temperature read 39 and I know that underarm is a bit lower than internal measurements. She was lethargic and irritable at home but cheered up meeting the doctor. He took her obs and said he was satisfied it was a cold but to keep an eye on her behaviour because it was quite a high temp (38.3 2 hours after calpol). I felt guilty taking her in with a cold but he was very kind.

Last night she was over 39 again. She is sleeping a lot, when she is awake she is a bit irritable but also alert and sometimes smiling and laughing etc. She's off her solids but having plenty of breastmilk and wet nappies.

I guess I am hoping for reassurance that such a high temp is normal with a cold?? She's never had a temp before, even after her vaccinations and when we all caught covid. She just seems so poorly, it is breaking my heart. I'm anxious that it could be something more serious for her to be running so hot for 3 days.

There are a few really nasty viral infections going round at the moment, it sounds like that. If she is okay ish in herself when awake and still getting plenty of fluid I wouldn't worry too much, but trust your gut instinct and if you're worried head to the GP or A&E.

Just to add keep on top of calpol and neurofen dosage, alternating them.

@Mynaddmawr I'd take her to be checked again, mine had similar ongoing high temp recently and on second check had a throat infection and needed antibiotics

Thankyou both so much for your replies!! I think I will take her for another check if it stays high today. It is a horrible bug for sure, am feeling rough and must be so much worse for a little one. But yes I am worried with her being so hot that there could be something else going on

Thanks again ladies, took her back to GP and her ears and throat look good, it just seems to be a very potent cold. Feel like a nuisance but also reassured. Its so horrible when they are poorly

I have a 8month old who’s been poorly now for 7 weeks, fluctuating temperature one minutes it’s normal 36.5 next it’s 38/39 then after half hour or so he goes back to his normal temperature. He’s scream crying, very unsettled, has moment of sever lethargy where we struggle to wake him. I’ve taken him to the doctors 5 times, 3 times to urgent care and everytime they take his obs and because he’s perked up a bit they are fine. I keep getting told by the doctors that it’s because I’m a first time mum I’m over paranoid that this is how babies are but he’s really really not himself I’m mentally and physically exhausted. What once was a happy healthy baby who only cried when he was hungry or needed a nappy change has now turned into a baby that’s really not happy and is crying 80% of the day. Has anyone else gone through this? I’m at a battle with the doctors and I feel like I’m drowning 😢
