What do you do about car seats on holiday?

Might be a silly question but…

what do you do about your baby and toddler car seats if you’re going on holiday abroad?

we are considering going on holiday but not sure about abroad or UK. Something that is worrying me is this car seat thing. We would only do an all inclusive holiday with a very short transfer time (about 10 mins) so it’s only the transfer that we would require a seat for.

thanks!

How old are your children. I have always had my baby on my lap and my oldest in the seat next to me using the seatbelt.
When renting a car I've hired a car seat.

If we hire a car at our destination, we check the car seats into the plane (it's free) and take them with us.

If we get a taxi / transfer we tell the company in advance and they provide them.

We took our car on the ferry, so the seats just came with us to Spain/Southern France.

We just had similar with a 20 min coach transfer and didn't take car seats (3.5 year old and 3mo). Youngest was in the carrier on the coach.
Will it be a taxi?

Kids are 3yo and 1yo. We would be flying and getting a short transfer but not sure if it would be coach or car.

The family on our coach brought car seats with them and strapped them onto the coach

We bring car seats if we're hiring a car. Mostly we use public transport only and don't bring car seats. I don't like using taxis on holiday (or even the UK) as I can never feel confident that car seats will be available if we ask for one, or if they'll be safe.

I wouldn't feel the need to use car seats on a coach (a full size one like a bus). I'd treat it like a bus and have a child in their own seat and toddler in my lap.

Ladyj84 · 03/01/2024 01:24

We've always taken the seats because we know there the right ones and so far never cost anything to check them in. I wouldn't have a child on my lap god forbid something goes wrong abroad

If you're having a coach transfer then you can't use car seats anyway as they don't strap in safely. If using a private transfer you can request car seats when you book. We always take them if we're hiring a car as you can pack them in car seat bags on the flight and it's basically free storage as they don't weigh them and you can put towel, nappies etc in there as "padding"!
