When did you make friends with parents at child's school

DS started reception this September and I recognised some of the mums from reception, I'm friendly and say hello at pick up and drop off but that's as far as it goes. Some of the mums do seem to be standing in groups chatting and a lot more friendly and just wondering if it's likely I'll have parent friends at the school or whether I'm just not clicking with them? There's been a few parties and again I'm friendly and chat but things don't really progress- no meet ups/play dates or messages. My friend whose child goes to a different school seems to have a good network of parents she is friendly with and will text and meet up with. Just not sure what to do or am I expecting too much?

I would meet and chat on the way to school. Most of us would walk anyway.

I would like this but most park at the back of the school and walk in so it's hard to time everything. There is one mum who lives not far and walks but she always seems really grumpy, doesn't say hi and not sure how I'd co ordinate it with her.
