Black poo in 2 year old

Help?!
my toddler has had black poo for a week now. He’s completely fine in himself just not eating and is abit more clingy that usual.
I have been to Ane and they told me to go to my GP to get referred to a children’s clinic and put me on a rapid response appointment but they phoned me up and said they couldn’t get him in for 3 weeks as of the doctors strikes. Said only to get back intouch if he ended up getting ill but with him not eating much at all I’m really worried. I’m hoping to get into another hospital to see if they will get him in there.
he’s been having no iron and I’ve not changed. His diet as he can be fussy. He’s also had mo food that can change the colour of his stools.

I have no idea what to do or what to think.

What has the gp said/have they examined him?

sandyhappypeople · 20/12/2023 23:58

Is that three weeks wait to see the doctors/gp or 3 weeks for the referral?

have you tried phoning 111? Sometimes they can offer alternatives or escalate to a quicker appointment if they feel it warrants it, not guaranteed but I’ve done it before when getting the runaround with the gp, if he’s not eating I’d definitely call them and tell them you’ve been told 3 weeks.

Seems ridiculous that a&e won’t do anything! Do you have a dedicated children’s a&e at your hospital? At our nearest they are two separate ones.

Basically asked me what his diet was like and has he been having an iron. They examined his stomach and said his stomach is soft. They really didn’t like the colour of his poo. They basically told me they want him to see a doctor in the children’s clinic but don’t really want to wait until the 15th.

other than that they really haven’t said anything.

That’s 3 weeks to go to the hospital to see a doctor and get all the tests done. Yes I phoned 111 up they told me to go ane which I did (they was no help) going to get in touch again to see if I can get into another hospital.

yes they do. Just seems really bad that they won’t see him until he’s Ill or in agony. I’m really not happy about it.

@Courtn9898 absolutely justified, this simply just doesn't seem adequate risk management at all and do you know what, if you need to rock up in a and e again then do it (& I wouldn't normally say that!)

LonelynSad · 21/12/2023 00:32

I'm not trying to frighten you OP but I distinctly remember a Consultant saying to me when my baby’s were all runny that 'You only need to start worrying if it's black'
Like I said I'm not trying to worry you but it would be wrong of me to not share this to highlight that it could be serious. I would go to A&E.

BirthdayPartyTraditions · 21/12/2023 00:32

I thought black poo meant blood loss? My brother had that and nearly died because he didn't take it seriously. Honestly just phone 111 and keep hassling them until you get someone to check him over properly x

PeopleAreWeird · 21/12/2023 00:35

Go back. He needs blood tests NOW

Courtn9898 · 21/12/2023 14:27

Thank for everyone replays. Been on phone all morning getting him transferred to a children’s hospital and said I can take him in straight away

Let us know how you get on

Elopelo · 21/12/2023 14:38

Wish you and your little one all the best OP. Hope you can get him seen as soon as. I really can’t believe they didn’t keep him in or do more tests etc especially as you said it’s been going on for a while and not a one off.

justasking111 · 21/12/2023 14:49

Good luck @Courtn9898 I hope now you will get real help

justasking111 · 26/12/2023 22:57
