Hi
This is long post just thought I share if anyone has experienced something similar.
My little one stared reception this year, she has been at nursery prior to that for nearly 3 years and she came out very confident and did really well there.
She seems to have settled in very quickly at school and even the teacher has praised for her ability to adapt and willingness to always get involved and try new things.
However a couple of months ago every other week I would get a feedback from the teacher about her struggle with one thing or another. The teacher would complain about me bringing too much food and she called her a slow eater so I started to reduce the food. Now that the school has resolved the food situation she has moved on with another complaint for the time first since my child was born there has never been any concerns from her GP, nursery regarding her physical health, she always won certificates at school for sports activities, recently the teacher said she noticed she runs a bit ‘funny’ she said so she recommended her join a group called movement works I agreed with no problem.
Moving on every single day we have been practicing phonics and blending and she seems to enjoy and in my eyes she is progressing. She had a speech and language sessions just before starting school a referral from nursery because of her confidence at the time but by the time she started the sessions her confidence was really high after a full 4 weeks session she was discharged because they didn’t think she had any speech issues and she was just taking over the sessions ( she is very bubbly, confident and very chatty). So when she started school I informed the teacher of the outcome but as part of the assessment the therapist referred her to also get her ears checked, when the teacher found out she was saying that maybe this affecting her ability to blend. The report again came back with no issues her ears are perfect.
Now the teacher is not happy with the session she thinks she should go back to spreadsheet and language therapy again because she is not blending well she says. The first book they sent her home with was a wordless book, she is already reading some of the words and sentences and she has been doing that before school. She said she is way below their target (I thought it is also the teacher job with parents to get her to the target not just trying to get diagnostic with something just to justify her incompetence) Also the teacher tells me she is struggling with blending, i hear that almost every other week, when I get home there is no issues with blending she does it happily. I’ve also asked her dance teacher how she is progressing she said she takes on instruction very well although she can get distracted because she likes to chat, last week I watched her first dance lessons because they don’t usually let parents in she had a substitute teacher and she did everything she was told (yes she was chatting)
I am starting to think there isn’t really a problem here as I stared to pay close attention to her to see what the teacher has been saying and I can’t find any issue or anything out of ordinary.
I even got confused one day when the teacher told me that they had a speech and language therapist in one day for other kids and they asked her to access my little one and she also couldn’t see any issues. Now the teacher is pushing me to go back to speech therapist again because she can’t blend well she says- clearly this women sounds like she is trying to get the speech and language therapist to do her job. I wonder, what is the teacher then? Also bearing in mind she is only 4 years one and she left nursery 3 months ago.
Also when we had the first meeting with Head teacher before starting school after meeting my little one for 5 minutes bearing in mind it was in her office and my child didn’t want to go into her office she was more interested going into the classroom the headteacher said I think she has got a speech issue as soon as she found out she was bilingual - despite the fact that my little one was answering all her questions very confidently and even pointed out that she had dropped her pen under the desk. Anyways fast forward after she started school while chatting with another
parent I found out that when her and her son met with the HT her son barely said a word but this woman never told her the child had a speech issues… guess what, the child is not bilingual.
I am feeling very worried and wonder whether these are really competent to look after my child?
Starting to wonder whether my focus on getting her to school because the ofsted report was so promising I overlooked the red flags.
I understand they have targets to meet but this is just getting ridiculous now.
My told me about a recent incident one of her colleagues punched her in the stomach, no one informed from the school when I told them they said oh yes she told us someone should have told you it has been dealt with. They are very quick to repeat the same conversation about her ape but no one tells me about more serious issues like her safety.
I take education very serious and I always open to work with teachers and support for my child’s benefit as I have done the nursery staff but I am starting to loose patience when rather than working together with parents and give time for things to work instead the school just want a perfect high achiever child, I think my child could be like any other child but it is about time and work from both sides
