Dealing with really bad and long-lasting toddler tantrums and meltdowns - HELP

Hi everyone.
I am in need of some help and advice, please.
How do you deal with particularly bad tantrums and meltdowns?
I have a 22 MO and she has never been a great sleeper, but within the last few weeks, putting her down to bed in the evening has become absolute hell. Last night things got to a point where she wouldn't stop crying and screaming for HOURS and I couldn't do anything, she literally wouldn't have it. I tried everything, talking to her, validating her feelings, ignoring her, changing the rooms, distracting her - NOTHING worked. She kept on crying and screaming more and more. In the end, our of despair, I gave her calpol, because I thought she may be in pain. She finally fell asleep at 11pm, only to wake up screaming again, for another few hours, at 1:30am.
Please tell me what do I do? How do I stop these?
