Which three days are best to work?

I'm going to be asking my boss for a three day week when I return from mat leave. I know they definitely prefer me to have Fridays off but which other day would you choose in addition?

Baby will be in nursery when I'm working so wondered if it's better for her to do a straight run Mon-Wed or if it makes sense for her to have say Wednesdays and Fridays with me.

My company operates a Monday to Friday 8-5 week.

Any opinions welcome!

Tuesday- Thursday worked best for me. Personally, because I had Friday to prepare for the weekend and Monday to prepare for the week/ catch up on home stuff if we'd had a busy weekend.
Also worked well professionally - 3 days continuously was better for me so I could really get stuck into stuff(. Fridays tended to be a day when no big events: meetings were planned so I didn't miss out. You do need to think about your particular job and what works best for it days-wise.

I work for local council and it works better to have Mondays off due to bank holidays. Basically you get your bh entitlement added to your holidays to take when ver you want. If you work Mondays you end up having to use annual leave to top up bh entitlement.

But also look at your childcare situation and what's available

Re bank hols you will get a pro rata amount. So if you work 10 hours a week you would get 2 hours bank hol (10/5=2) so say you work 5 hours on a Monday and 5 hours on a Tuesday, on a bank hol week you get Monday off but only 2 hours bank hol pay. You then need to use 3 hours annual leave to top it up to normal wage, every bank holiday Monday.
Whereas if you worked 5 hours Tuesday and 5 hours Wednesday. Monday would be your normal day off but for every bank hol you get 2 hours added to your annual leave to take whenever you want.

The bank holiday thing is key. Read your staff handbook. Where I work, if your contract is 0.6, you are entitled to 0.6 of the bank holidays. Therefore if you work Mondays - you will need to use some of your normal holiday entitlement to cover any bank holidays over the 0.6.

I work 4 days compressed but love having an Wednesday off. I don’t get that Sunday night feeling as I’m only working 2 days in a row before I’m off (with DD) for a day, I never feel I’m far away from spending a day with her, and we don’t get many bank holidays mainly just Christmas and new year so the Monday thing isn’t an issue.

I did Monday-Wednesday-Friday and I loved it. Never felt behind because I caught up with everyone on Monday, Wednesday was my meetings day and Friday gave me that nice Friday feeling. Plus I never came back to two days worth of emails. It depends what you prefer but that worked really well for me.

I'll be returning to work doing Mon, wed, thur. Wed & thurs are nursery days
Tuesday and Fridays off.
