Self settling and sleeping though

This is a sleep question but I thought there might be more response here. I have a 10
month old who is unable to self-settle (rocked to sleep), although can clearly link sleep cycles as she’ll do between 4 and 6 hours at the start of the night, and then anywhere between 20 mins to three hours depending 🫠.

Did anyone’s little one start sleeping through without learning to self settle? If so, what age and did you do anything to make this happen? I’m also thinking of trying to night-wean in case that helps (breastfed baby).

Nightweaning is the key. My breastfed baby always self settled at the beginning of the night but then still relied on feeding during the night. Luckily I was seriously ill when my LO was 15 months old and was hospitalised for 3 nights and had to stop feeding altogether. This helped enormously but was awful for husband for 2 weeks!

Mine never ‘self settled’ as such, in that we’ve always fed/cuddled to sleep and still do 2.3yrs.

He slept through the night for first time at about 19/20 months but not consistently, maybe 30-50% of the time and the rest of the time he would wake once or twice and I’d feed back to sleep as this was quickest.

We night weaned at 24 months and sleep has actually been worse since then, he probably sleeps through 10-20% of the time now and other nights he wakes once for a cuddle - usually just comes into our bed.

So night weaning may not be the magical solution we’d all like it to be, and you could be taking away the thing that gets them
back to sleep quickest. Sleep is also not linear, it goes up and down.

My 10 month old breastfed baby went through a period around 8 months of fairly regularly sleeping through, but then it's been up and down. She always feeds to sleep at night but will sometimes wake up when put down so will be rocked also. The past week she has always been waking when put down and I could spend hours picking her up where she'll fall asleep only to wake on put down again so I tried leaving her and she's rolled over and gone to sleep! She usually wakes around 5-6am but she's still tired since she doesn't go down quickly on a night so I'll put her back down and she'll wake but again usually goes back to sleep as I leave the room

This is all really helpful- thank you! It seems so individual and non-linear. We now have teething to contend with, which obviously doesn’t help!!
