Shoes for 8 month old walker

My little one is now walking confidently around the house unaided. She is desperate to go out into our garden, but I can't find shoes anywhere near small enough. I've measured her foot length and she's 10cm which appears to be about an infant size 1, but Clarks and Next only stock from 2 upwards.

I myself have tiny feet (I'm a UK 2) and have very narrow feet, so know the pain of getting small shoes, but I'm surprised that there seems to be nothing available - surely other early walkers have needed shoes?

Please note - I am fully aware of the benefits of walking barefoot. We don't wear shoes in the house at all. But to allow LO to go out into the garden when it's wet, I really need shoes for her.

What about socks and a puddle suit with feet?

Tinyfeetmummy · 15/12/2023 12:32

Looks like puddlesuits with feet are about as rare as tiny shoes - I've just scoured online and can't find anything in 6-9 months. And snowsuits are useless - the feet are so padded that they're impossible to walk in.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!

I think when mine were first walking (not this early, but they're super-small) they had those little soft leather shoes like the Inch Blue ones - https://www.inchblue.com/all-products Because they're leather they're pretty waterproof and good for soft little feet.

My ridiculously early winter walker wore a pair of size 2 first walker ankle boots, even though they were too big, and she just wore them the minimum time possible. I used to take her to the park with big fluffy welly socks (also too big, but excellent as knee socks) over her actual socks, pop her in the shoes whilst we were actually in the play park, then back into the welly socks for the trip home. I went as flexible as possible because she was so young and they were a bit big – I found tiny bobux sizes can turn up really cheaply on ebay or ollipops.

She also had a 6-12 month fleece lined puddle suit from mountain warehouse that was good for keeping her warm and dry but still letting her actually move. I did used to have to roll the cuffs back at the beginning, though. I found it on Vinted, so not sure if they still make them or not. Lidl also do good ones, although I've found them very generous size-wise, and I'm not sure if they go down to 6-12 months or not.

Just to add, we loved Inch Blue and similar for better weather and out and about indoors where barefoot or just socks wasn't suitable, but found they wet through quite quickly on something like wet grass. The rubber-soled ones are better, but we still needed something more weather-proof for the winter.

What about something like this? They're waterproof bootees and you can get them in age 6-12 months.

I had to get them for my daughter when she started nursery as we have the opposite problem as she's 14 months and not walking and needs something to keep her feet dry when she goes outside!

Although older (13 months), DD was super tiny when she started walking and was smaller than a size 2. We just had to get her size 2 Clarks and put thick socks on her.
