Is it normal for newborn to sleep a lot?

I'm not complaining but my newborn who is coming up to three weeks has slept a lot of the day. Unless I wake him for a feed/nappy change he will sleep. Is this normal? He's got normal nappies, temperature is fine etc. he's also alert when awake..... he just doesn't seem to do much. My parents say he's a good baby and content etc.... I wake him for feeds every 3 hours during the day and 4 hours at night.... trying to stretch it out.

Yes it's normal for some babies OP. He'll probably "wake up" around 12 weeks.

I think they're all different. My first barely slept at all, from day 1, second slept loads and I was quite worried in comparison!

As long as they're feeding, having plenty of wet and dirty nappies and health visitors are happy etc when they see them I wouldn't worry. They wake up more as they get older.

Ok thank you.

My baby did this, I never ever woke them for a feed

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 15/12/2023 04:02

Enjoy it while you can 😁

PeopleAreWeird · 15/12/2023 04:03

Keep waking for a feed

Proudmummy67 · 15/12/2023 04:07

My baby is exactly the same and also coming up to 3 weeks. I'm glad you've said this as I think I've felt the same as you - a bit worried I have to wake him to feed! Assuming he would cry. This makes me feel it can be a normal thing. I'm also using the same timings as you and waking to feed, that's what the hospital told me to do before I left so I've just stuck to it 😊.

Yes! My second was a really 'good' sleeper. He slept through from birth (fed but straight back to sleep so no prolonged waking). At around 3 weeks he was going from 11 til around 6am.
There wasn't any regression either which upset the 'just you wait' brigade. He still loves his sleep now as a teenager he'll often be in bed before me and up later.

Tonight has been great. Two feeds, he's had his nappy changed and fast asleep straight after

He might be growing- Moses is looking a bit smaller than a few weeks ago.

Or maybe he's stretched to his normal size

I would love to get him in a sleep bag. That blanket gives me nightmares... (yes I'm an anxious parent).

How did you know when to leave him asleep from 11-6?

Get him sleep bags asap

Just make sure they are the right size and correct tog

They won't fit on the Moses as I think too long. He has one but it's second hand (good condition). I will try tomorrow.

@ororangeguy let us know how you get on with the sleeping bag and if you recommend them. If it's good I will buy one 😊 I'm at a very similar stage to you x
