CMPA/Still very constipated

Hello, my little one was diagnosed with CMPA a few months ago due to constipation (he was having a poo once a week). The doctor advised to change over to non dairy milk to see if it helped and it did for a little while, maybe a month? We’ve had to go back to using laxatives as he’s hardly pooing anymore which makes me think it wasn’t the milk? Does anyone have any experience with this? If it’s not the milk, what else could it be? He cries when he has to go and try’s really hard but he never has a ‘normal’ poo, it’s always hard and there’s never that much!
He also has very bad eczema which has flared up this week, he’s just not having the best time I don’t know what to do. I give a probiotic every day as well but again isn’t doing much. I thought the milk (althera) would help but we are back to square one!

What milk is he on. There are two types of dairy free milk -extensively hydrolysed and amino acid.
They start you on the extensively hydrolysed as it tastes nice, is cheaper and it is better for babies long term tolerance of dairy if they still have some dairy in their diet at a safe level. Alternatively there are amino acid formula which contain all the components of milk separately so no milk at all.
If dairy milk is a sheet of newspaper, extensively hydrolysed has been roughly chopped and you might or might not recognise the article depending on which bit you pick up. For some babies this is enough for them to not recognise the bits of newspaper as newspaper. An amino acid formula was never the newspaper but each word has been printed separately.

They start you on the extensive hydrolysed formulas first. You might be asked to try a second on too as they are all slightly different. If you have tried 2 with no success you should definitely then ask for an amino acid formula which are neocate alfamino and puramino
