Baby carrier for newborn / very young baby

Does anyone have a recommendation for a carrier/ sling that can be used for a very young baby, and isn’t a stretchy wrap sling?

I tried a stretchy wrap with my 1st DS and it made me feel really claustrophobic. I’m hoping for something a bit more structured but still soft enough for a new baby.

Baby bjorn. Was so comfortable and the baby felt snug. Used it for ages.

Have a look at mamaruga zensling. Ive been using since newborn and still going strong 12 months later

What carrier did you use with your first DS post stretchy wrap?

I used the baby bjorn mini carrier for mine. He was only 5lb 2 and stayed tiny for ages so I used it for out and about. It was lovely and soft too!

Tempytempy · 03/12/2023 19:22

Sorry, “mamaruga zensling”, typo

scrunchmum · 03/12/2023 19:24

Ergobaby omni 360 is suitable from 7lbs, mine were both born bigger but we used it straightaway

mintich · 03/12/2023 19:24

Baby bjorn. Used this with my third and I wish I had it with the older two!

Yes second hand baby Bjorn until baby was more robust.

It's a doddle to use but as baby gets heavier can be rough on the shoulders/upper back

I didn’t use one, as I didn’t really need to, I used to just spend hours sitting on the sofa holding him while he slept.

That won’t be an option with this baby as DS1 is now a lively 2 year old!

I have an ergo 360 with newborn insert.

Totally fair, I only asked in case it was one that could potentially be used! DS2 has lived in various carriers so you are correct with your assumptions 😂

I personally hated the baby bjorn mini. It put a lot of pressure on my back and shoulders, I didn’t like the way DS2’s legs just dangled down and he also didn’t like it much either. I’ve been exceptionally happy with both our Tula Explore and our Integra size 1. DS2 was 8lb and neither were suitable from day 1. The Integra from about 3 weeks and the Tula from about 6 or 7 weeks.

If you aren’t keen on stretchy slings or woven wraps, for the tiny newborn stage, ie first 6 weeks I’d try a ring sling. Or potentially something like a close caboo - it’s soft but semi structured so a bit less fiddly than a wrap. I absolutely echo the advice above to try rental first. Sling preference and fit vary widely.

I loved the kahu baby. Its a really soft and lovely buckle carrier. Easy to get on and off but feels safe.

Also tried baby bjorn and ergo 360 but didn't get on with them - too structured and felt uncomfortable.

100% recommend visiting a sling library if you have one locally

Tagalongtoucan · 03/12/2023 20:04

Another vote for baby bjorn. Possibly the best thing I’ve ever bought, our 4 month old has probably spent more of her daytime in it than out of it Grin.

poorlybaby23 · 04/12/2023 10:37

Ergo baby embrace for newborn until about 6 months, then the ergo baby 360 omni carrier. Still use the 360 with 3 year old, got my embrace off Vinted.

SErunner · 04/12/2023 10:55

I used our Ergobaby Omni 360 from day 1 with no issues. She wasn't a particularly big baby.

Batbatbatty · 04/12/2023 13:39

Marsupi Classic or Marsupi Breeze, we absolutely loved these for our when he was tiny!

Sconehenge · 04/12/2023 13:48

The artipoppe ones are great but very spenny!

Thank you. I’ve just found one on Vinted for £10 so I’ve done an impulse buy!

If it doesn’t suit me I’ll try baby bjorn and ergobaby at a sling library before buying one as they’re a bit more expensive (even on vinted).

But I feel more prepared now I’ll have something at least.

Ergo baby embrace, my baby sleeps great on it and it’s very comfy and easy to use

Ebbahumama · 13/01/2024 17:47

I recently ordered the ergobaby, baby Bjorn air and the Artipoppe carriers to try them all. They all have slightly different good points but I found the Artipoppe the most comfortable and least faff putting on. And little one seemed to be happiest in it as well.
I have a discount code if anyone would like it.

Ergo embrace was perfect for my newborn, followed by the omni
