5 month old suddenly not settling at night

Hi all
Our 5 month old has suddenly stopped settling at night. It's nearly half ten, he's been awake since 4pm, showing sleepy cues since 6:15 and spent basically 6:30 to now screaming every time we try to put him down and for several minutes after.

Nothing that usually soothes him is working, singing, rocking, feeding, using a carrier, pushing in the pram, we've even tried settling him with us - he just gets angrier and angrier. We thought (think?) maybe it's teething but teethers/cool things and even calpol hasn't chilled him at all.

He did sleep wonderfully until 4 months (regression on cue) where he started waking up every 2 hours crying. He's still waking pretty regularly but doing this as well, so we're all starting to go a bit mad

We have a bedtime routine. Naps are a bit all over the place but i go by his sleepy cues. He usually only has two and goes down great for them, although he does tend to nap in the pram not in the bassinet

Is this normal? Am i doing something silly that's knocking his sleep? Help!
