Bedtimes for a 6 year old?

Heya, just wondered when your 6 year olds get to sleep (or did get to sleep if they are older)
My boy is in year one and struggled with the transition a lot. He is likely autistic (on waiting list for assessment) and finds school difficult, often coming out incredibly tired. I start getting him ready for bed at 7 and by the time he is ready and we’ve done story etc he’s generally tucked in at 7:30. He then wakes up at about 5:30 and refuses to go back to sleep but is still clearly tired and has bags under his eyes (after school they are full on deep purple shadows!) so he needs more quality sleep but given how early he gets up an earlier bedtime is unlikely to help and if I go later he may well still wake at the same time and it would be worse!
Just wanted an idea of what others do/did with their 6 year olds so I can compare! Thanks!

My daughter is also being assessed for ASD and ADHD. She had quite low sleep needs since being a baby and doesn’t get tired easily. She goes to bed about 8 but we do allow her to read until 9 because if we put her down too early she’ll just lie there awake and her mind starts racing. She gets up at 7 and it seems to work.

Ds has asd. He's 8. He's in bed at 8pm falls asleep around 830 and wakes 6-7am

You might find that an earlire bedtime, doesn't help the wake up time but will give him more sleep. Generally my DD is in bed asleep by 7-7.30pm after waking at between 6 -6.30. But this morning was up at 5.30am so i'll aim to get her into bed by 6.30pm. In the first few weeks of school i had one day when she was fast asleep by 6.10am as she was so tired but still woke at 5.30am!

I'd try an earlier bedtime. Some kids wake at a set time, no matter what. This means a later bedtime doesn't help, they still get up at 5:30am, but an earlier one can mean they get more sleep (because they still wake up at 5:30am even if they've gone down at 6:30pm).

Six year old here goes to sleep about 7:30 and is up around 6am.

My 6yr old in year 1 is in bed by 6.30 where she and her 3yr old brother have a couple if stories before I tuck them in. They have a nightlight and listen to audio books to drift off to sleep. The 6yr old is normally asleep by 7/7.15 and 3yr old asleep by 7.30

Mine is up in her room at 7.30, then she plays or draws for a bit and is usually asleep by 8.30. Wakes up at around 7 which has been her consistent wake up time since she was weeks old. She’s very good at self regulating.

Thank you for all your comments, it’s a bit of a mixed bag really isn’t it?! But I suppose every child is different after all. I may try an earlier couple of nights and see what happens (and pray he doesn’t get up any earlier 😩)
Occasionally when we go out somewhere he doesn’t get to bed until later and he still gets up just as early, I just don’t know if he would in the long term but it can be so hard to tell!

My 6yo is usually asleep by 8pm. We go up at 6.30/7pm so I can sort his brother first, he'll usually play then into bed around 7.15pm for some reading and asleep by 7.45/8pm.

SheIsStuck23 · 29/11/2023 17:21

I take my 6 year old up to bed at about 8pm and we read together for about 15 minutes. He’s usually asleep by 8.30pm.

ChickpeaPie · 29/11/2023 17:22

My 6 year old is tucked in and lights out by 8pm. Probably could do half hour earlier but he goes same time as his sibling.
wakes up around 6.30-6.45 regardless of what time he goes to bed

My autistic DC never slept early. Ever. 11pm would be an early night. They just don't sleep.
