Streak of blood in 13 month old’s nappy - worried!

Hey guys, I just changed DS’s nappy and was very worried to see a streak of blood. He had a poo (not much) sorry TMI! And there was a small streak of blood.. not much at all though. Perhaps he was straining too hard because he didn’t poo much at all? He’s feeling absolutely fine apart from this, he’s happy as always and there’s nothing out of the ordinary at all. He might be constipated? I don’t know though. He doesn’t seem constipated. The blood wasn’t much at all but I’m still so worried. Should I ring for an appointment with the GP tomorrow even though he seems absolutely fine? Any advice?

It looked mucousy and there was a small streak of blood. I don’t know how to explain. There was a bit of poo in the nappy but not much so maybe he was straining hard?

Definitely get a GP appointment tomorrow. It's probably nothing but it might be something (it was with DS - ended up getting quick treatment and all sorted but could have been a different story).

If in doubt ring and get advice. Yes it could be nothing but why take the chance? The fact it's more of a bright red indicates the bleeding happened near the end of his GI tract so could be from straining but could be something else. Hopefully it's easily sorted! I saw some bright red in my DDs nappy the other day and freaked out but on closer examination it was the skin of a tomatoe 😂

Thank you so much. I am worried but I’m not sure because he seems absolutely fine. I changed his nappy again and wiped and there was no blood at all. It definitely was mucusy blood even though it was just a tiny bit, I am thinking it was due to straining but I probably will call the surgery in the morning

DS is teething, idk if that’s linked but his molars are coming out

I called 111 who told me that a doctor will call back in the next 20 mins, if they don’t then to take DS to A&E. I definitely didn’t think it’s this serious, so scared now 🥺 he seems absolutely fine in himself

Hope all is okay xx

I would say he’s constipated but glad you’re getting checked. Let us know x

Try not to panic, as you said he seems fine they are just being cautious, hope you get it resolved

Waiting for the call. I’m thinking constipation too tbh, DS did have a poo in the morning but not after that and he drank less water today too. Let’s see what the doctor says

So I had a consultation with an out of hours doctor, who didn’t seem too worried. They asked me about any allergies etc and about DS, they told me to just keep an eye on him and if it happens again then to contact my GP.

The threshold for medical contact with infants is a single episode of blood in stools. Lots of reasons most of which aren't a big concern but they usually want a quite quick review just to make sure they do fall in the category.
I'm glad you got a quick review and are back home without concerns x

I'm sure that's a relief, glad you didn't have to go to A and E
