It's a potty training one....

My DS2 will be 3 in January and we are having a bit of a struggle with potty training. He is brilliant with his poos, I would say 99% of them go on the potty or toilet. Wees on the other hand are a bit more tricky. If we are at home with nothing on his bottom half he is pretty good at knowing when he needs to go, and just goes straight for the potty and wees on it. If he has anything on, pants, pull up, or just commando under trousers, he just pees in it! We have tried setting timers to sit on the potty every 30 mins, sticker charts, rewards etc but as soon as he is covered up he just wees in whatever he is wearing. Any wise MN advice?

Maybe reduce the time on the timer a bit. I think with DD I was putting her on the potty every 15-20 mins to start with x

I think just sounds like he isn't fully ready. He can feel when he needs to go sometimes but not all of the time. So he is on the way to getting it but just isn't ready.

Solution A = patience and washing machine method (not easy)

Solution B = back to Nappies. This won't damage anything or make your child suddenly unable to toilet train (easiest and best option for your child, not so easy as a parent to admit their child can't do it yet)

Get rid of the timer, accept lots of accidents. Definitely throw the sticker charts in the bin. He needs to be given the opportunity to listen to his own body and take himself to the potty. He needs to be allowed to have accident and learn from them.

My DD is 3 in feb and has been potty trained 6 months. I read Sarah Ockwell Smith's book gentle potty training.
