Newborn Constipation

Hi there!

My newborn is 11 days old and every time she tries to poop she screams and really strains, we've tried infocol, water, leg cycling, tummy massage, foot massage, burping, a warm bath, a tiny bit of extra water in her feed... we've run out of ideas! She just seems so uncomfortable and none of us are getting much sleep, it's been a tough couple of days. The only thing that's kinda worked so far is my partner holds her legs and I hold her butt cheeks apart and she did a couple of small poops (gross I know) but I feel like there's got to be an easier way.

Has anyone got anything else that we would try? I've seen people recommend orange juice and sugar water which I'm not really willing to try as I don't feel comfortable doing that, but if anyone has any magic tricks I would be really grateful 🫶

As she’s so little you need to ask the midwives if you’ve not been discharged or your health visitor

We had to get lactulose on prescription otherwise my daughter passed very painful rabbit pellet like poos. We used the colic relief massage we learnt in our baby massage course through the HV
6 count water wheel A push knees to the tummy for a count of 6 then sun and moon for a count of 6. Knees back to the tummy for a count of 6 and a cuddle. Do this three times, three times a day.

My daughters constipation was caused by medication for her reflux
Give your midwife or GP a call.
