Burping baby at night

My EBF 12 week old gets put down and squirms around a lot at night. I try to burp him at each feed (have tried during and after) and nothing happens, he doesn’t burp. He’s very hard to burp anyway but at night it’s impossible. It ends up waking him up and agitating him so I then have to feed him again and the cycle continues…

Does have any tips as I feel a bit lost with what to do

Have you tried holding them upright for 20 minutes after the feed? This is what I was recommended when DD was tiny and it helped her at night

Agree with holding up and also please look up active sleep. I’m convinced that a lot of the time I thought my baby was awake and agitated they were actually asleep.

I have a similarly aged EBF baby who’s very windy. It was a nightmare at night for a while because she’s fed to sleep, but you couldn’t burp her once she’d conked out. For the last few weeks I’ve been putting her on her front on me for 5 minutes after every feed and the burps just seem to bubble out of her within a couple of minutes. Then, because she’s still drowsy, I can just rock her for a bit before she goes down again. I’ve got it down to one wake up in 12 hours since doing this, but we did used to have nights where it spiralled like you described!

I was told by a health visitor years ago that walking up and down the stairs makes burping much easier / quicker - so I tried with DS and it worked!

I kept mine upright for 15-20min after each feeding. I know it's exhausting as you are loosing time from sleeping but it really helped with my DD.

I agree with keeping baby upright for 20 mins after an each feed. Also, look up “wonky winding”. Can make it a little easier to get rid of gases.
