I'm not easily shocked, but this has floored me.

Don't know where to start with this one, I'm just feeling so awful!

I had a phone call from the head of DS1s school today, informing me that he, and some other boys, had googled certain words, and had been able to access pornographic site.

I was told the words which had been googled, so, wanting to know what he had seen, googled it myself. What came up on the screen was seriously hard core, infact it was so awful, I turned the computer straight off.

When I talked to DS about it, he said he loooked away immediately because he didn't want to see it.

I just feel so dreadful my "baby" - (he's 9, and in Y4 has seen this).

The head is investigating how they could have accessed the site on the school computer.

he shouldn't have been able to view anything like that on a school computer though

I am sorry that this has happened to your son. Sadly (also admiringly) I think that maybe they overrode the schools anti porn programme. A good thing in that your kids are willing to work out the problem and solve it, but a bad one, because even he didn't want to see.

Someone will come along with some really helpful informations in a minute I am sure. But sending nice thoughts to you anyway.

School's fault, they really really should have somethng installed so this doesn't happen. Hey, he looked away, he'll be ok. What were the words?

i'm shocked that the school web filters allowed them to get to these sites, i thought they were meant to stop this?
feeling worried now, that my son is the same age. has he googled things i dont know about. they are such babies still

It's tricky trying to strike the right balance at school.

Our filters are getting to the point where perfectly legitimate sites are blocked, whilst at DH's school they have to pre-book the sites they wish to access; pointless if you want the students to show a bit of research initiative.

It's good your school alerted you. The will probably inform the local authority who often roll out the same IT systems across county, so they can block it.

It did include the word naked, so I would have thought that would have been enough not to get through any filters.

God, its shocking isn't it .......

I'd be dismayed and upset too, both with my son and the school....

However at least the school let you know promptly and they are looking into it.

Unfortunately our babies do grow up and it can be a horrible world

No, wicked water witch, it wasn't legit....they were being cheeky. I've no idea what they thougt would come up, but I think they all had a shock.

oh I see, so it wasn't a word the teacher had given them? Oh I see, well, I'm not sure the school deserve a telling off then, lots of perfectly innocent words bring up porn on google.
(sadly) Lesson learned for the boys I think, I wouldn't be that worried. Naked what though?

Take the opportunity to talk to him about sex, nakedness etc. Don't make a fuss over what they googled, make a fuss that they were not supposed to, but be careful not cause any issues around sex.

It was the size of the penis which scared me most.

Agree with SpacePuppy - this might be an opportunity for you to talk to him about sex (or, in this instance, porn). He's a young boy, soon to be an adolescent - he's going to encounter this stuff. It's your job to help him navigate his way through it.

(Easier said than done, I know - when my boys are your DS's age I'm sure I'll be quaking too.)

I caught a group of 11 year old boys looking at ladies wearing next to nothing on a school computer, they had googled "cars"

God, poor poor you. My 8 year old son was told some pretty choice things by another boy and proceeded to repeat them to a girl at his new school, whereupon I was hauled in to be told off by the headteacher. It's just horrible when you've tried to protect them and realise you can't control everything.

Difficult to comment with authority here girls, as DS not even out of nappies. Bubuhe equivalent in my day (mid to late seventies) - was mens magazines of ANY genre. I saw some serious hard core before I was ten,...I was very very curious and did not have parents who could openly talk about anything remotely rude.

I turned out to be normal and balanced without any odd sexual hangups and and agree that to an extent some satisfaction of curiosity appropriate to age would be helpful.

Would also like to ensure school is actively dealing with the issue....

My son (then 9) had a Space project to do and googled "asteroids" - the first site on the list was porno!!! Goes to show that even supposedly "safe" search terms can throw up these sites. It's going to be a fact of life for our children and all we can do is drum home the safe surfing messages and keep half an eye out on what they are looking at / use parental controls etc. Agree the school have got a lot to answer for - at my children school they are not allowed to use Google at all....

Agree with you Willali,..I googled my own ame and came up with a very noce looking, medically enhanced Dutch based blonde with her very own cam which went anywhere you asked it to! Was most def not me...!!!

Can Google be switched off? (Not clever enough about these things to know the answer to this)

Like JayneF, some kids at our school googled their own names a couple of years back and got some rather scantily dressed ladies!

Yes it's unfortunate but he's seen it now and it won't kill him. Might be the opportunity for a chat about these things but I don't think it's worth getting too flustered about.
