Anyone else had such a huge amount of time off? How on earth do you catch up? It feels such a relief but at the same time i am nervous this could be the beginning of the end.

I'm doing a degree ff and due to personal family circumstances missed loads of time and have had to deferr until next year. If you have been given that time off, you have been given it for good reason, try not to fret the next month away as it will defeat the purpose off the time off.

Perhaps ask a fellow student to keep notes for you or your student officer if you have one to keep you up to speed, most of all try and make use of the time off to look after yourself.

Thanks Mhamai, i have emailed the head tutor of my year and asked him what i should be doing. He has said, you're ok, it's mitigating circumstances, do nothing, just get yourself straight before piling on the commitment to college work and take care. So i suppose that means exactly what it says, i should just put it to the back of my head for now.

Good luck with your degree and i hope you have a really good run at it next time you start.

your situation will also be put forward at the assessment board which meets to confirm your marks. The Board can use information to raise borderline marks. Make sure you've sorted out any library books before you take your time out or at least call the library. You don't want to return to huge fines.

No prob ff, although college is officially over I still have a years worth of essays to submit but honestly I spent many a wasted week worrying about falling behind and for nothing. Do stuff for yourself these next few weeks that will reduce your stress levels.

Try getting out for walks. Soak in the bath. Have a pamper evening where you use masks and gels. It's so much harder to look after ourselves than we care to admit but it pays in the end. Anyway, no doubt our paths will cross again on the student board especially so take heart but for now take care of you!

fairyfly · 10/03/2008 18:09

Ekk, what do the assessment board do if you have no marks?!

I will do mhamai, with the time off and my children at school i can actually go to the gym also. Really need to beat the crap out of a punch bag.

CountessDracula · 10/03/2008 18:30

I wouldn't worry ff

I had ages off when I was first diagnosed with Crohn's disease

They were fine about it and I caught up very quickly. A couple of people posted me lecture notes etc (so in fact I had more info than usual as didn't bother with lectures half the time anyway ) My tutor was great too and sent me some stuff when I asked for it

fairyfly · 10/03/2008 18:44

And you got a degree cd! Seems like it will never happen sometimes.

Yes Mhamai, tis me, forestfly, fairyfly, perhaps i should call myself THE fly, very rock and roll. Email me x

Heya fairyfly, my last year was a total disaster at uni. I started the year off being really ill with glandular fever so missed loads of uni then. That was followed by finding out i was pregnant, wasnt too bad but doing exams with a massive bump was an experaince i never want to repeat. The uni were totally understanding about everything and loads of my assignments were handed in really late. At the end of the year the board of markers came together and assessed everyone who had submitted assignments late. Basicly theyre just checking out that you have a ligit reason for it and that ur not pulling a fast one. They may alow you to have extensions untill august i think which will give you lots of time to catch up.
Make sure you use the time that they have given you off to sort everything out at home so that your ready to go bk and focus. You might even want to do a small amount of work... when i was off i missed it and I also found it really useful to have a study buddy. Basicly the tutor hooked me up with a guy in the class who was doing really well. I would ring him and he would give me a quick breif on what they had learnt in the day which was really useful
I hope that your little bit of rest helps you out and dont worry. The uni is prepared for things like this. Your not the first person. Im gonna have to have some time off again this year as I have another little one on the way lets hope I dont have to go through the exams with a bump again. this one is due a litte bit earlier than the last.
Good luck!!!

fairyfly · 11/03/2008 23:42

Thanks Charlotte, sounds like you have everything under control, good luck with your degree, and babies!

I found it didn't matter too much with the time I had off, but I'm doing English and I suppose it depends how your course works. Everything I do is late (6 kids at home, and I'm a lone parent. What can they expect?!)I am sure they will be extremely sympathetic to your situation, FairyFly, and wish you the strength and all the other stuff that you need to succeed. Keep going girl. You CAN do it.
