Hairy maclary is all a hit, also lift the flap books with interesting facts in them eg See inside trains and a food one I think it's called, What happens when you eat, and there are others too.
To be fair I even gave my 4 year old the washing machine manual to read and he enjoyed that for a while, so you can think outside the box a bit too and save money!

DD (age 5) is enjoying the Winnie the Witch series, the Mr Men books, and anything by Julia Donaldson. And some of my old books like Topsy & Tim and some of the Noddy books (carefully checked through first)
