What age did you all stop breastfeeding?

To all breastfeeding mamas, I have a 7-month-old and I'm just curious: at what age do most of you stop breastfeeding? I realize everyone's journey is unique, which is exactly why I'm reaching out. How long do you think we should breastfeed to give our little ones the best start? Thanks!

He should sleep just as well with a bottle. Why a boob. That’s a bit much at that age but ok

It's kinda obvious they're going to get more comfort from a boob than a bottle

TripleDaisySummer · 02/11/2023 13:03

I don't think I met anyone who bf past about 2.5 - though always heard about them on MN/media and never met anyone who claimed to have bf a school age child - anyone doing it really is an outlier often use to demonize any bf feeding past very young babies in my bitter experience.

I've tried him with bottles, ever since he was tiny. He never took to it. I tried formula and pumping. All different brands of teats. He never wanted to know.

It is quite common to get bottle and dummy refusers when babies have been breastfed.

My point the quality and length of his sleep shouldn’t be directed by the need for a boob specifically. I’d it is there’s an issue.

TripleDaisySummer · 02/11/2023 13:05

I had one that wouldn't take any bottle - to late introduction thanks to bad advice with bf problem we had - went straight to cups.

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:05

Exactly so better so bottle feed and never have that issue in that case. Regardless why on Earth anyone is obsessed with breastfeeding talking walking school age kids is just ridiculous end of.

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:05

Sounds like he skipped several steps and that’s great

Well he won't be napping forever, will he, so I can't see the issue myself. There's a reason so many infants sleep on the boob and thats because it's natural. The way nature intended.

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:07

In school they cut food up with a knife and for and drink from cups so great if they get a head start on that and seriously no need for them to come running out of school talking in comprehensive sentences and then latching on to a nipple. Honestly have a weird with yourselves about your own over attachment issue if you’re doing that!

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:08

*word not weird although maybe it’s well directed

Blippard · 02/11/2023 13:11

@Mumbuns I'm curious, if you think it's weird that some babies/toddlers need to suckle to sleep - what did you think dummys were for? Or are you against the use of those for sleep too?

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:11

People in this very thread claiming to feed school age kids which I find disturbing frankly

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:11

Against dummies for school age kids certainly. Time to let go isn’t it really…

Blippard · 02/11/2023 13:13

OK, school age - got it. But what about under 2? (as that is the age you said was weird for my son to still be suckling to sleep)

Boozlebammed · 02/11/2023 13:17

It's so strange that mothers find this weird. It's a natural bodily function. Natural weaning age can be 7 or beyond. I can only put this down to ignorance or over sexualization. We don't do it about any other natural function. Imagine 'why would you take a shit when you can get a colostomy bag, my husband likes to stick his dick up there'. I seriously have no issue with formula feeding but the world has gone mad when mothers are made to feed bad for doing what they are physically designed to do.

So it's not about long term bf - honestly it never is it's always about any BF.

Look there are benefit to BF over populations and many people do get on with BF - if you didn't I'm sorry fed is best.

There is absolutely no reason to attack people who did or do bf. BF is a natural and at one time only way to feed a baby - thankfully we have ff and that gives options to modern mother's - but trying to demonise mother's who bf (some like me for family medical reasons in hope of reducing certain risks) who are trying to follow WHOs medical advice - by claimed it's about the mother, sexualising it or going on about extreme outlies - is bloody ridiculous.

OP getting to 6 months bf - it's about 1% of UK mothers.

SpringingJoy · 02/11/2023 13:21

Didn't take long did it 🙄

If you don't/didn't breastfeed or don't like it past 2 weeks/ten months/two years, then that's you.

Some mothers do. That's them.

Feel free to not breastfeed your own baby or toddler. No. One. Cares.

But 'ewwww it's grosssss' type comments from (adult?) women towards those that do is rather pathetic. Go read a book or Google it. Take some responsibility for fixing your own ignorance rather than expecting others to do it for you.

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:22

Over the age of 2 it is strange that’s the end of it

Mumbuns · 02/11/2023 13:23

The one I breast fed is allergic to pretty much everything and not academic. The one I never breast fed is so healthy and thriving off to study politics in uni in sept so I’m struggling to believe those benefits.

'That's the end of it'. On a talk forum. With people. Whose opinions will quite obviously differ.

Tell me you have a low IQ, low emotional intelligence and poor critical thinking skills without telling me.

This sentence does it (regardless of subject).

I have a degree and doctorate so I’m not sure your analysis of forum etiquette is entirely accurate but ok:/ I can be an intelligent woman, have relevant personal experience and have these opinions. I would suggest a woman feeding an actual 6 year old is likely to have a lower IQ if anything as it’s of no increased benefit to that child and I would argue is in-fact significantly detrimental.

I was a very poorly child and I was formula fed and the same happened to my sister and brothers. So its down to the child and I've seen benefits with breastfeeding

Did they not teach you on your doctorate, @Mumbuns , that human perspectives are highly biased, and anecdotes are not the same thing as data?
