Do I have an oversupply?

I'm exclusively bfing my 10 day old and it's all going well apart from one thing. If I go longer then 2 hours without a feed my breasts become extremely engorged and painful. I haven't expressed because I don't want to affect my supply as I've not be bfing for long. This is also worse at night for some reason. Is this normal or does it sound like I have an oversupply?

That's normal unfortunately. It should improve between 2-3 weeks and then improve again around 6 weeks

Night is when feeds have the biggest boost to your supply

Are you still under the midwives? It would hurt to run it past them to give you more reassurance

I had this with my DS2 and it will settle down. I found that warm compresses helped.

My babies are now teens but I seem to remember my midwife advising to sit in the bath and let the heat allow a natural let down and to massage my breasts to allow some milk to run off. Not to stimulate the nipples as that would create more supply but just warmth and massage. I have a recollection of sitting in the bath with my breasts leaking milk into the bath that way, and feeling the relief.

Thanks for the replies. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully it settles down. I am still under midwife care, have my last appointment on Friday. If it isn't starting to settle a bit by then I will speak to them about. I'll be 2 weeks then so hopefully it should start to settle then.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!

With my first when it had been three hours since her last feed I could feel my boobs fill with milk and start leaking. My supply didn’t settle for six weeks at least, but I did have an oversupply at the start.
