Tongue tie

Just wondering if anyone has gotten their baby’s tongue tie released privately and if so did it make a difference? DS is 7 months old and has a tongue tie, he’s always struggled with feeding but because it’s never affected his weight I’ve been told they wouldn’t do anything about it unless it affects his speech later on. The GP and HV don’t seem concerned but he’s struggled so much I’m worried it’s going to be an issue

Argh I typed a long response and lost it! This will be shorter.

Experienced BF supporter and mum of 2 TT'd babies here.

I'm sorry your issues were dismissed. Weight loss is not the only TT related issue mums and babies experience although it is most urgent.

Most babies I see post division are newborns and they still struggle with adjusting to feeding in a new way. The older a baby is, the more they struggle to make adjustments to latch (whether that's because of a TT release or to make feeding better).

There is often work to do for the mum as well - many women I've met who say a TT release didn't work for them are those who did not seek support after and did not have optimal positioning and attachment.

I've not been present for a division in a baby over around 4 months, I can tell you older babies tend to struggle with the release (becoming distressed) more.

I would recommend a.consultation with a private practitioner first to see if they're comfortable performing this on an older baby and what difference they think it makes.

Hello! I know its been a while since this was originally posted.. but did you get the TT corrected privately in the end?

Currently going through the exact same dilemma with my 9 month old.

Hello, we decided not to have it done in the end - just speaking to other people in similar situations it didn’t seem worth it. He’s 19 months old now and it’s not an issue anymore at all. He still has the tongue tie but it doesn’t affect him eating and it doesn’t seem to be affecting his speech - he’s only just starting to say actual words so I guess that one we will have to keep an eye on as he starts to say more. At the moment the only thing it affects is him being able to stick his tongue out all the way.
