Books for 4 year old

Hi, looking for some recommendations for good story books for a 4 year old. He loves animals, funny and adventure type stories and isn't a fan of anything "scary" at the moment.

We've got Julia Donaldson, Kipper, Paddington, Winnie the Pooh, Spot etc. He also really loves the Adventuremice, Shifty McGifty and the Rescue Zoo and Forever Homes series too. He loves shorter books in the day and then me to read longer stories in bed as he falls asleep.

Any recommendations would be welcome!

Little people big dreams - paper books are longer and good for bed time and the board books for quicker stories during the day
Hollie Hughes lovely lyricalness to her books
Wiffy Wilson series
Winnie the witch series
Short books morag hoag (sp)

We plan a trip to the library if we are in need of refreshing our go to books

Rachel Bright's books are good. I particularly like 'The Lion Inside' and 'The Koala who could'. I also like Gile Andreae's books such as 'Chimpanzees happy tree'. My dc recently turned 5 but isn't ready for the next stage of books yet.

  • The Detective Dog and What the Ladybird Heard series (both written by Julia Donaldson, but different from the Axel Scheffler books).
  • The Day the Crayons Quit is just wonderful, it's so funny and clever.
  • Second the Rachel Bright books (The Lion Inside, The Squirrels Who Squabbled and The Koala Who Could). The illustrations are beautiful too.
  • The 'Oi!' series are great - Oi Dog, Oi Frog and Oi Duck-billed Platypus (and stunning illustrations; I think they're by the same illustrator as Rachel Bright's books).
  • Some of the Dr Seuss books are great for this age, too - I'd go with The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back as they're less "quirky" than some of his other stories and a 4 year old would be able to understand them!

I keep recommending this site for finding books, but I honestly love it. It’s a great place to find book recommendations and you can search by age. They have a lot of the greats for 4 year olds:

For daytime books, my 4yo is obsessed with the Usborne see inside series, your body/space etc. She's also now big into where's Wally type books so she can flick through on her own.

Storytime faves are:

  • The diddle that dummed
  • Hairy Mclary series
  • Tom Fletchers there's a dragon/unicorn in your book, as well as the dinosaur that poo'd series by him (these are also a HUGE hit with her nursery group).
