15 funded hours

Me again! I’m back with just a quick question this time.

I understand that the 15 funded hours are term time only. There’s also an option (in some nurseries) to do 11 hours spread across the whole year instead.

Does someone know the breakdown and how to explain that 11 hours over the year is equivalent to 15 hours term time? The owner of DD’s nursery hasn’t heard of doing 11 hours spread over the year but she’s happy to accommodate it as long as it adds up.

I tried to find the 11 hours mentioned somewhere online, maybe on a Gov website or somewhere legit but I couldn’t. Does anyone know how I explain this to the nursery? I’m bad at maths😆

11 X 51 weeks is 561 hours (11 X 52 if you don't have a closure week is 572)
15 X 38 school weeks is 570 hours

So not exactly the same but close enough!

So you need to calculate the total number of hours you are entitled to, which is 15 hours a week for 39 weeks of the year.

This gives 15 x 39 = 585 hours per year

Then, you need to calculate the stretched hours per week, so across the whole year. Most nurseries are open 51 or 50 weeks of the year.

Let's say 51, so to work out you do 585/51 =11.47 hours per week

I would check how many hours the nursery is open.

How many weeks a year is your nursery open?

Apologies, 38 not 39 weeks a year so just adjust for that.

38 x 15 = 570

570/51 = 11.18 hours per week

I believe it’s 570 hours total. Term time only works out at 15 hours. If you divide your annual entitlement over the whole year it’s 11 hours I.e 570/52

lamalamalamasquirrel · 25/10/2023 20:30

A lot of nurseries say it can't apply to lunch or early starts so check that

Lockdownmummy · 25/10/2023 20:47

The nursery need to check with your local authority.

My LA will only allow the hours stretched each term rather than the whole year i.e 13 weeks of funded hours stretched over September - December

PinkMoscatoLover · 25/10/2023 20:52

@Lockdownmummy so you’re able to do 13 hours a week straight from Sep to Dec? So your child can still go throughout the half term and Christmas holiday?

Oh sorry guys I only saw the last two comments, I didn’t scroll up and see the rest! Thank you all.

I’m sure the nursery is open every single week during the year. So 570/52 seems like the most accurate calculation!

@PinkMoscatoLover we are on 30 hours but assume the principal would be the same and the calculations as per previous posts

My DC do 4 full days full time so our bill is reduced rather than just using funded hours

Ah right I see what you mean.

DD already does 3 half days that I pay for. I wanted to add the 15 funded hours on top but spread out across the year so that she uses 10 (out of the 11) extra hours a week. I’d like her to do 5 half days all throughout the year but I’ll get the nursery to check with the LA first.

It’s proving more difficult than it should be😆 DD is Autistic so she needs routine. It’d be difficult to amend her routine come half/end of term
