Name labels: what to put on them?

What do you put on your child's name labels?

Full name, first name only, last name only, etc....?

Also, any recommendations for particular brands?

My LO is 3 and at nursery x

we’ve found MyNametags indestructible.

surname only is good if you want to pass on to siblings, otherwise first and surname and you can cross out the first name down the line.

I have both names on. If a uniform survives one hood I unpick the label and sew on dd2's name.

I use cash's name tapes.

What you want in a name tape is for your child to be able to easily recognise their own things, even before they can read.

I use stamptastic, which is quick and lasts way longer than the 30 washes promised, and just do surname, but our surname is relatively unusual so unlikely to be any others in the school.

Depends on your surname, if common I’d put both names.

Firstname lastname, but DS is an only.

Stickerkid are great for stick-on and iron on labels (for stuff like bags, shoes, hats gloves).

I use Wovenlabels for sew-in labels (for stuff that gets a lot of washes, like school shirts).

And stamptastic for clothes that get washed but not daily, like jumpers, non-school T-shirts, etc - it is so much easier than sew-in, but I find the ink fades out after a wash or two so no good for school uniform.

I have a stamp with just the surname so that way it covers sibling hand me downs - small school and unusual surname means it’s not duplicated.

I used to put surname only so things could be reused by siblings. We have an unusual surname and my DC went to small schools so the probability of anyone else having the same surname was tiny. If there are likely to be others in the school with your surname I'd put the full name. We used Cash's woven name tapes. Sewing them on is a pain but they last forever. I never found any iron on ones that didn't peel off though it's a long time since I was at this stage so there might be something better now.

We use Easy2Name sticky labels. None of them have ever come off in the wash but they're easy to remove for selling or handing down. I go for first name and surname and will either just get more stickers or cover the first name when I hand down to my second.

I put first name last name. Uniform will likely be passed on to DD2 but she wasn't born when I first started labelling stuff for nursery! I've seen "Amy & Beatrice Cook" (made up sibling names) on labels which would save effort. But I have a stack of labels with DD1's name and just assumed I'd unpick and sew in DD2's name in a few years. I prefer the sew in labels (wovenlabels) as they last better, can be reused and look neater. Have easy to name stickers for shoes and other items like water bottles. And also stampers (stamptastic) for things that are awkward for sewing, like socks and pants.

I ordered 250 sew in labels when DD was starting school, she is 25 now and we still have around 100of them 😂
