Nipped my 6mos old with nail clippers :(

Our DD is 6 months. She is adopted and has been with us for a month.

I usually clip her nails when other half is giving her an evening bottle, but thought I’d chance it tonight while she was sat in her little chair.

She was a bit agitated with it, so I know I shouldn’t have bothered continuing. But then I nipped her on the second nail and she started bleeding. I feel awful. Lots of tears from her.

Sorted it with a cold bit of cotton wool and then lots of cuddles and kisses before bed…but I’m sort of worried now that she’ll hate me forever (irrational, I know!).

Please tell me this is easily done and I’m not just awful 😂

The little curved ones that Tommee tippee do are really good!

Oh god I did this to dd1 when she was much younger, there was blood everywhere.

I bit them when she was asleep after that, or made DH do it.

Another vote for an electric file , I’ve just this second done ds whilst he was asleep , always do them when he’s having last feed of day and he even flinches or wakes

It's so easily done.

I took off a bit of skin, and made DC1 bleed the first time I tried cutting DC1's nail. I used scissors for about a year after that. I went straight to scissors with DC2, and swapped to the clippers at about 8 months old.

I found putting mine forward facing in our babybjorn sling I could manage to cut nails with less risk of injury as less wriggly

splothersdog · 23/10/2023 23:50

I did it.

And my Dad pinned a nappy to my belly.

Nobody was scarred for life

I did this too - it was the worst feeling to have accidentally hurt her finger. It's easily done when they have such tiny nails. After that, DH took over clipping duties as I couldn't bring myself to try again.

My DH did this to DD when she was 5 weeks old, couldn't vet one of the edges with baby scissors so thought he'd try with our nail clippers, took some skin off the end of her finger, lots of tears from her and a bit of blood and he felt guilty for days, even called me from work to ask if her finger was okay about 2 days after the incident (it was the tiniest bit of skin lol). After that, we only use baby scissors when she's fast asleep and then a soft file if she has any sharp edges.

Your baby is fine and won't hate you, DD is a right Daddy's girl at 5 months now 😂

these are brilliant, you can see what you're doing more & v gentle. i always found clippers too tricky when baby is small
