Would you pop out to the shop whilst your child was in bed?

Not that I am thinking of doing it, it's just that I was in on my own last night (ds (14 months) tucked up in bed) and had major chocolate craving and there was none in the house. Anyway, as one who has said some pretty harsh things about the McCanns, of course I did the decent thing and just ate everything else in the house instead.

However, I happened to mention this to a friend today who also has kids - she looked surprised and said she nips out all the time (she is a single parent), only to the bottom of the street and only once she is sure her 2 are asleep.

Does anyone else do this??? Be honest now!

oh no, this ones here for the night now..wheres that bloody hard hat when you need it

FWIW, no i wouldnt.

WigWamBam · 08/03/2008 20:34

No, I wouldn't. A lot can happen in ten minutes.

Bluestocking · 08/03/2008 20:35

No, I wouldn't. Even though I don't think anything would happen, it's not worth the risk.

Hell NO!!! I've thought about how tempting it would be to drop dh off at work (round the corner, 5 mins top) while the baby's asleep so I don't disturb her, but I couldn't, anything could happen, what if we crashed or anything could delay you home, not worth the risk. And I'd feel sick...

Frizbe · 08/03/2008 20:36

no, not a chance

Wilkie · 08/03/2008 20:37

Nope

mynaughtylittlesister · 08/03/2008 20:37

No, and my DDs are 13, 10 and 8.

What if there was a fire, I would never forgive myself!

Weeteeny · 08/03/2008 20:38

absolutely not, as bluestocking says, not worth the risk.

moominsmummy · 08/03/2008 20:38

Nope.

DH is a child protection social worker and is one of his current cases is to deal with a mother who keeps doing this - if she doesn't stop he will have to talk about taking the children into care. Obviously this woman is leaving her child for some time in the evening though

God, No way. Anything could happen. I'm amazed anyone does this. Isn't it illegal to leave a child without a babysitter?

TheFallenMadonna · 08/03/2008 20:38

No.

No. DH is often away and I know how annoying it is when you want something from the shops after childrens bedtime, and just can't leave the house. It's so unlikely that something would happen. But, no would never ever do it.

sweetkitty · 08/03/2008 20:41

no

fordfiesta · 08/03/2008 20:42

Nope. definately not!!!!

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 08/03/2008 20:42

Never at all, what if something happened to you and the kids were left in the house alone?

cazboldy · 08/03/2008 20:43

absolutely not.

if they wake they wouldn't know where you are

and also what might happen to you and/or them.

Quite frankly it's about priorities isn't it?, and organisation.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 08/03/2008 20:44

Not in a million years.

schneebly · 08/03/2008 20:45

no

PotPourri · 08/03/2008 20:46

No way

AliciaJohns · 08/03/2008 20:46

That's a really good point that a few people have made - it's not just about what would happen to the baby, what if something happened to you while you were out? wish I'd said that to her now.

If I wanted chocolate that badly I would order a take-away and include it! V expensive chocolate that way, admittedly, but better than the alternative! Or look in the back of the cupboard to see if any cocoa is lurking

ladytophamhatt · 08/03/2008 20:47

no way.....

although I might be tempted if I lived literally next door, I;d take the baby monitor with me and run in getthe choc and run back out again. Wouldn't take any longer to get back then if I was in the garden. But otherwise No way

LadyOfWaffle · 08/03/2008 20:47

No, I don't even put the bin out (bin is round the back of the house but in a 'public' area, not a garden). FWIW, I would leave a 13 year old, I remember being left while my mum worked nights before 13, but I guess it depends.
