Would you pop out to the shop whilst your child was in bed?

Not that I am thinking of doing it, it's just that I was in on my own last night (ds (14 months) tucked up in bed) and had major chocolate craving and there was none in the house. Anyway, as one who has said some pretty harsh things about the McCanns, of course I did the decent thing and just ate everything else in the house instead.

However, I happened to mention this to a friend today who also has kids - she looked surprised and said she nips out all the time (she is a single parent), only to the bottom of the street and only once she is sure her 2 are asleep.

Does anyone else do this??? Be honest now!

yes, but I wouldn't if the shop was more than 2 mins away (which mine is).

but then mine don't generally wake up in the evenings.

CoteDAzur · 08/03/2008 20:48

No. Not ever.

as for the risk of getting run over - do you people never climb a ladder, use tools or do anything remotely dangerous when in charge of kids?

i'd be more worried about something happening so that I couldn't get back TBH. Not so much about them asleep alone but about me get clobbered over the head or something.
In my imaginary shop next door there wouldn't be any other people and a forcefield all around me to stop any large object falling from the sky hitting me.

I never have left mine alone BTW incase you think this shop next door is real....

Mumcentreplus · 08/03/2008 20:51

I have ...the shop was literally across the road...waits for crucifixion

I wonder if we're weird, mumcentreplus, or if the other popper-outers are too scared to post.

as it happens our shop is shut when my kids are asleep, but I have popped out when they were awake (with youngest strapped into high chair). I would pop out if it was open late though.

AliciaJohns · 08/03/2008 20:59

Not sure it is just personal choice though, someone metioned it was against the law - does anyone know if that's true?? Consensus seems to be that most people are of my mind so feel a bit less of a weirdo now!

also my 18 month old wouldn't notice if I had popped out for 5 mins and he woke up. Unlike all you other mums, I don't always hear him within 5 mins anyway, you see.

TrinityRhino · 08/03/2008 21:01

no, couldn't do it, would rather phone a taxi to bring me some chocolate

Mumcentreplus · 08/03/2008 21:01

[email protected] are lurking

luvaduck · 08/03/2008 21:02

no way hosay!

Blu · 08/03/2008 21:02

I did when DS was a baby and we lived in our old house - but the 'corner shop' was literally across a very narrow residential road - i could see into the bedroom window from the counter. I used to watch from my front door, and when there was no one else in the shop, who could have held me up paying, I used to dash across - watching our front door and wondows all the time.

I wouldn't go out of sight of the house.

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2008 21:03

I was expecting this to be a mix when I openened this thread - am relieved to see so many people agree with me as I sometimes think I'm a bit paranoid. I don't even know if I would if they were older (teenagers) - I'd hate to wake up and find DH gone and no idea where!

SenoraPostrophe · 08/03/2008 21:04

it's not against the law, aliciaJohns. There is no legal age limit to leaving your children alone, just laws about neglect (and nipping to the shop for 5 mins isn't neglect, unless you live in a war-torn shanty town and don't lock the door)

Mumcentreplus · 08/03/2008 21:04

It isn't actually against the law...Technically...just not advisable

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2008 21:04

All a bit of a technicality for me as our nearest shop is 25 mins walk away anyway

AliciaJohns · 08/03/2008 21:04

SenoraPostrophe - does he cry very quietly or do you live in a really big house??? I don't think mine would notice either, but I think the main worry would be what if something happened to you whilst you were out - unlikely, but could happen.

Unfitmother · 08/03/2008 21:04

No, would if they were awake

SenoraPostrophe · 08/03/2008 21:05

AJ - neither, but we make a lot of noise. ace name btw.

phlossie · 08/03/2008 21:06

No way!
I'm pretty shocked that anyone else would, tbh. What if I locked myself out? What if the house caught fire? And I hadn't even thought about all the what ifs to do with me being run over...
I don't go to my children the second they wake up either - that wouldn't be my worry. And I can get to the shop and back in less than five minutes, so I've been tempted. But I couldn't.
Awake or asleep, I'd never do it.
